This is a something special wine, and all the motivation you need to visit Portugal next year.

Mike's Tip

Aged and elegant, this is the older brother of Colheita and comes across much more mature after aging 12 months in the barrel. Be ready though, this wine packs a punch at 14.5% and its smooth fruity tones will mask what it may do to your head :-0 . Strong foods or just for sipping after your meal.

Colheita

  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliveira
  • Price: 190 Kč

Mike's Tip

Young and brash, this is a edgy red mix of typical varieties from Portugal. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz make up this lightly oaked starter. Best to decant or let sit, letting it breath will calm this one down into a gentleman. Red meat and strong foods here. Leave the carrots in the fridge.

Young and fresh with an attitude. This is also a light Vinho Verde but with more character and a fuller flavor. More acidity and an intense citrus flavor. A great warm weather wine and round enough to be served with white meat.

  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliveira

Mike's Tip

A much more serious affair. A fresh and acidic wine that you would expect from a Portuguese white, but with a ton of complexity. Look for passion fruit and a slightly spicy mineral finish. Unfamiliar territory, but absolutely delicious.

Leguas 370 Reserva Tinto

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 245 Kč

Mike's Tip

The name makes reference to the treaty of the 370th meridian between the Portuguese and the Spanish back in Colombus's day. Harvested from the steep slopes along the Duoro, this wine has hints of vanilla from the barrels is was aged in and red fruits. A good all round wine that will go with any warm dish, be it fish or meat.

Montaria Reserva Tinto

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 245 Kč

Mike's Tip

After 7 months in oak barrels, the tannin are jumping out of the bottle ;-) Aromas of wild berries with dark chocolate and eucalyptus. Round body in balance with acidity and structured tannins. Long and complex. The best value in the box!

Evidencia Tinto

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 211 Kč

Mike's Tip

I have to give the guys at Parras wineries credit. This is one of the smartest Portuguese wine packaging designs I have come across. The contents is just as good. 6 months in oak, and a good dose of tannin that really evened out the taste. A little lighter, with a light rusty color. Red meats here are mandatory.

Evidencia Branco

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 211 Kč

Mike's Tip

This white leaves the Vinho Verde far behind - a very different affair indeed. The Dao region is known for it's mineral and citrus flavors and what you may find to be more "acidic" this wine will pair very easily with fish and salad. Fried fish, dripping in oil (read fat) and this wine - heaven on earth....

Casa das Gaeiras Reserva Branco Vinhas Velhas

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 449 Kč

Mike's Tip

All I can say about this one is WOW.... They told me after the tasting that Casa das Gaeiras is a legend in the Lisbon area, and I just had to shake my head. The best Portuguese white wine I have ever tried. A light acidity and DEEP complexity, pair this with only white food (cheese and cod) so not to compete. Delicious.

Muralhas Vinho Verde

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Vinho Verde
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 245 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another bubbling Vinho Verde, albeit this one is a tad more sophisticated. Like all wines from the region, this one also smacks of fruit - apricots! This wine has a bit more body than the entry level wines from the region, so do not hesitate to pair this one up with some white meat.

Aromas das Castas

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

The alarm is going off on this medal collector. More than we can count. A fabulous full bodied wine full of pears and peaches. Not a pic-nic drink, but one that is ready for the top table. Don't underestimated this one - delightfully complex.

Mau Maria Vinho Verde

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Vinho Verde
  • Alcohol: 11%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Oliviera
  • Price: 154 Kč

Mike's Tip

One has to believe that GOD said "Thou shalt not be bad Vinho Verde". Can't remember him ever being wrong ;-) Lightly sparkling wine with citrus color and pleasant aromas of citrus and yellow mellon.

Montaria Grande Escolha

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 400 Kč

Mike's Tip

Rounding out our "tour-de-force" of Portuguese wine regions, our last wine comes from the Alentejo region. Apart from the red fruits you expect here, you also get a taste of toast and leather giving it a musty flavor. (Grape Varieties: Syrah, Touriga Nacional e Alicante Bouchet)

Douro Quinta dos Mattos

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 436 Kč

Mike's Tip

Now this is a perfect example of Portuguese wine. Amazing content, terrible marketing. This has got to be the most boring wine label I have seen for ages. But that aside, this is an absolutely fantastic red from Douro. Heavy and very full bodied, this 15% content is lost in the smoothness. If you are not in a hurry, stick this one away as it will keep getting better. Some of the best PT has to offer. (Grapes Varieties: Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional)

Castelo do Sulco

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 250 Kč

Mike's Tip

A city wine !? Not really, but this is the only red wine from the Lisbon region to make Wine Spectator's list of top 5 with a score of 88 points. Well balanced with red fruit and lots of plum, and some spicy hints from the Syrah. Just a touch of oak, not overpowering. Lovely. (Grapes Varieties: Touriga Nacional, Aragonez & Syrah)

Anjos de Portugal Rose

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 10,5%
  • Style: Light semi-dry rose wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 161 Kč

Mike's Tip

Entry number 2 for the best summer low alcohol lunch wine for a hot day. (that made it sound a lot more complicated than it needs to be). Just a little bit more sugar than the white version, and just a dash more flavor. Simple, fun. loved it. (Grape Variety: Touriga Nacional and Espadeiro)

Alvarinho

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 387 Kč

Mike's Tip

The thing about Alvarinho is the floral taste really overpowers the acidity you normally expect from a dry white wine. So search for hints of lemon that lasts a very long time in your mouth. Get ready for a surprise, as this one is a bit unusual. (Grape Variety: Alvarinho)

Quinta da Lixa

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 238 Kč

Mike's Tip

Welcome to the high end of Vinho Verde. Some very distinguishing features here to recognize. First is the presence of the Alvarinho grape, considered the queen of white grapes from the region. This gives this wine a floral scent on top of the more typical acidity. Bone dry and a long finish. Secondly is an 11.5% alcohol content bringing this wine into the serious category. Complexity is the word here, and absolutely stunning! (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Alvarinho)

Terras do Minho

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 180 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a great example of a mid range Vinho Verde that leaves the pick nick behind and makes a serious impression. Fresh with a perfect acidity, this will be a great wine for fish or white meat. (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto)

Anjos de Portugal White

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 9,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Box: Portugal and VINHO VERDE
  • Price: 161 Kč

Mike's Tip

The best thing about this kind of inexpensive Vinho Verde is you can't take it too seriously. Light and just a hint of bubbles, this is the ultimate pick nick wine. This one has a little bit higher acidity than the previous Vinho Verdes's we have had, and just a tad higher alcohol content. But that doesn't change anything. Drink this one ice cold in the last hot days of summer. (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto)
