Oliveira

What do we do every summer ?

Drink Vinho Verde of course! Regardless of your holiday destination or your (unwanted) summer work load, a batch of Portuguese wines from Oliveira is a traditional part of IWCoK summer already for four years.

So how did we do it this time ? Vinho Verde from our favorite winery (and wine hotel!) Quita da Lixa was a must. Having a light summer wines is always on the August agenda and lucky for us these guys still have some wines we haven’t tried yet. One is the familiar low alcohol, light sparkling picnic favorite, the second a more serious affair full of citrus making a perfect grilled fish companion.

We also introduce a new wine maker to CZ, with Montes Ermos to do their head line red, in 3 different ages. Coming off the hills of the Duoro, expect deep cherry and dark fruits giving a hearty fruity taste. Look forward to work through the years of the range. And they bring a very full and balanced white, that is suitable for fine dining, or a romantic dinner at home.

Departing from the wines of Oliveira for a moment and on to something to do before the end of summer. Come check out the Oliveira Vinho Verde Boat Bar on “Náplavka” – about as close to that beach holiday you’re going to get in Prague. A glass of “Aromas das Castas”, some grilled shrimp and a view of Hradčany off the deck of a boat. Need I say more ?

Young and fresh with an attitude. This is also a light Vinho Verde but with more character and a fuller flavor. More acidity and an intense citrus flavor. A great warm weather wine and round enough to be served with white meat.

Mike's Tip

A much more serious affair. A fresh and acidic wine that you would expect from a Portuguese white, but with a ton of complexity. Look for passion fruit and a slightly spicy mineral finish. Unfamiliar territory, but absolutely delicious.

Smooth as silk. Just imagine the steep hills along the Douro river, and the best of what the region can offer. What you get is a wine exceptionally smooth and elegant wine tasting of ripe dark fruits and a light touch of French oak. This is a something special wine, and all the motivation you need to visit Portugal next year.

Mike's Tip

Aged and elegant, this is the older brother of Colheita and comes across much more mature after aging 12 months in the barrel. Be ready though, this wine packs a punch at 14.5% and its smooth fruity tones will mask what it may do to your head :-0 . Strong foods or just for sipping after your meal.

Colheita

  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira

Mike's Tip

Young and brash, this is a edgy red mix of typical varieties from Portugal. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz make up this lightly oaked starter. Best to decant or let sit, letting it breath will calm this one down into a gentleman. Red meat and strong foods here. Leave the carrots in the fridge.
