Portugal and VINHO VERDE

It is a bit of a tradition at IWCoK that we dedicate August to Portuguese wines. Indeed the first year was just coincidence, but since than we know that Vinho Verde is the ultimate “cheap date” for hot weather and outdoor eating any day of the week. The light wine with just a few bubbles on the tongue never disappoints and wont dent your wallet (indeed a good thing if you just spent all your money on holiday).

But what I didn’t know until this year (I admit, I am ashamed…) is that Vinho Verde is not a type of wine, but a region in the North of Portugal. Shocker – not every Vinho Verde is fizzy and costs 150 Kc !

And that is where this journey begins. This month we have 5 very different Vinho Verde’s from the “Pick nick gulper” to the very sophisticated Alvarinho and everything in between. Apart from the region, the one red thread in these wines comes from the climate of the area. The region is known for its cool wet climate, making ripening difficult and producing wines extremely fresh and normally with a high acidity. These are wines for fish, white meat and salty foods – do not look any further.

And the reds ? We start with 2 wines from the region most known for producing port, the Douro. These are dark, powerful reds with a very respectable alcohol content. These are full of the grape Touriga Nacional, which many consider to be Portugal’s finest. Not beginner wines ;-). We also have wines from the Alentejo and Lisboa regions, so we should have everybody’s taste covered.

The one trick that we have to solve each year with wines from Portugal is just finding quality wines available here to buy. Over 90% of Portuguese wines are sold domestically, in Brazil, Angola and China. (the first two countries can read the label, the last doesn’t care :-) leaving little for the European market. And what we do find is normally very limited. Fortunately, this month we were lucky to rediscovered a great importer right here in Vinohrady – Cafe Oliveira and a new partner Cerfis Wines.  So if you have to have that cheese you had on holiday in Madeira, and that lovely red to go with, this is the place!

Enjoy

Now this is a perfect example of Portuguese wine. Amazing content, terrible marketing. This has got to be the most boring wine label I have seen for ages. But that aside, this is an absolutely fantastic red from Douro. Heavy and very full bodied, this 15% content is lost in the smoothness. If you are not in a hurry, stick this one away as it will keep getting better. Some of the best PT has to offer. (Grapes Varieties: Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional)

Terras do Minho

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 180 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a great example of a mid range Vinho Verde that leaves the pick nick behind and makes a serious impression. Fresh with a perfect acidity, this will be a great wine for fish or white meat. (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto)

Castelo do Sulco

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 250 Kč

Mike's Tip

A city wine !? Not really, but this is the only red wine from the Lisbon region to make Wine Spectator's list of top 5 with a score of 88 points. Well balanced with red fruit and lots of plum, and some spicy hints from the Syrah. Just a touch of oak, not overpowering. Lovely. (Grapes Varieties: Touriga Nacional, Aragonez & Syrah)

Kasta

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CerFis wines
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

I was under the impression that all the good reds from Douro had to be pricey. This one is a bargain and a great introduction. Much lighter in both flavor an alcohol than the other Douro in the box, this ones soft tannin makes for a very easy drink (even on the sofa). (Grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão)

Anjos de Portugal White

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 9,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 161 Kč

Mike's Tip

The best thing about this kind of inexpensive Vinho Verde is you can't take it too seriously. Light and just a hint of bubbles, this is the ultimate pick nick wine. This one has a little bit higher acidity than the previous Vinho Verdes's we have had, and just a tad higher alcohol content. But that doesn't change anything. Drink this one ice cold in the last hot days of summer. (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Arinto)

Anjos de Portugal Rose

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 10,5%
  • Style: Light semi-dry rose wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 161 Kč

Mike's Tip

Entry number 2 for the best summer low alcohol lunch wine for a hot day. (that made it sound a lot more complicated than it needs to be). Just a little bit more sugar than the white version, and just a dash more flavor. Simple, fun. loved it. (Grape Variety: Touriga Nacional and Espadeiro)

Alvarinho

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 387 Kč

Mike's Tip

The thing about Alvarinho is the floral taste really overpowers the acidity you normally expect from a dry white wine. So search for hints of lemon that lasts a very long time in your mouth. Get ready for a surprise, as this one is a bit unusual. (Grape Variety: Alvarinho)

Quinta da Lixa

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Oliveira
  • Price: 238 Kč

Mike's Tip

Welcome to the high end of Vinho Verde. Some very distinguishing features here to recognize. First is the presence of the Alvarinho grape, considered the queen of white grapes from the region. This gives this wine a floral scent on top of the more typical acidity. Bone dry and a long finish. Secondly is an 11.5% alcohol content bringing this wine into the serious category. Complexity is the word here, and absolutely stunning! (Grape Variety: Loureiro, Trajadura and Alvarinho)
