Along the way

Lets call this months wines a collection. A collection because these are wines we have been collecting in the IWCoK cave over the past few months. And why not. Sometimes we run into a wine just like that, we like it and we buy it without any idea what to do with it. Ohh, the wine club business can be so romantic…

A familiar wine maker helps, Mas du Bagnol from the Rhone valley has already brought a a great red blend, but their Chardonnay takes us to the next level. Rebula from Slovenia can never go wrong, and a delicate Sauvignon from the Loire Valley makes an elegant addition to any dinner. Clean and crisp. Add in a limited edition Vernaccia found by local treasure hunter Mr Sklenicka, and you have a host of flavors that meet the most discerning guest.

Our reds come from five old European countries. Merlots from the Rhone and the Brda region of Slovenia, a delicate blend from the finest old vines in France, a much easier full bodied affair from Portugal, and a “reserved” Spaniard from an acclaimed family all bring something else to the party. Take them out and pick your favorite, always a relaxing chore.

We hope you like this collection as much as we did putting it together. The “red thread” this time is true to our motto – great wine, at a fair price. Enjoy

Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant white variety from the Loire valley. Not as grassy as Sauvignon from other parts of the world, but fresh and clean with a lovely mineral and citrus flavor. Always great with a light meal when you want flavor, but not something heavy.

Mike's Tip

Rebula has got to be one of the best white varieties from the area around western Slovenia and Eastern Italy. Although sometimes aged on oak, I prefer it fresh right out of the tank. A crisp and lively wine from the Brda region - love it!

An absolute pleasure of a lightly oaked chardonnay from the Rhone Valley. Soft yet full of flavor, you get lots of banana and butter from this superior winery. You will love it!

Only 2,000 bottles of this top selection of the best Vernaccia and Sauvignon Blanc (10%) grapes are made each year. It is then left to ferment for one lunar month in small oak casks to deliver an intense power, complexity and depth.

Mike's Tip

Elegant flavor full of cherry and smoke, this award winner comes from one to the most renowned Spanish wine makers. Aged for 2 years in oak barrels, this Reserva will take you straight outside and demand that you put something on the grill. Pull the cork and get on with it.

Belles Courbes

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Mangustino
  • Price: 319 Kč

Mike's Tip

As the name suggests, the 45 year old vines producing this wine are no new comers. Mature and tempered, this wine blends four varieties into a slightly tannic, but well balanced drink. Pair with soft cheese, salami or pasta.

Krasno Merlot

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Vína-slovinsko.cz
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

Merlot is no stranger to the Brda region of Slovenia. This is a fruity and slightly peppered wine that will go great with a burger and all kinds of "eat with your hands" food. Not complicated, but very fruity with a dash of acidity to keep your pallet clean.

Vilalva

Wine description:

  • Country: Portugal
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 269 Kč

Mike's Tip

Juicy, fruity with an aroma of cassis, cherries and hints of spices. Soft and easy to drink, this is a feel good wine ready for any occasion. Especially "couching" !!!
