Box: April 2021

Golden Box

Gold, Gold Gold. Our April box could be called a collection of Prague Wine Trophy’s best of the best. With three Premium Gold Medals a Gold and a Silver, this box from our friends at Aperittivo has more hardware than you will find at Hornbach.

Our white wines are led this month by a lite, subtle Italian Pecorino.  A hint of flowers makes this low acidity wine very easy to drink. And what better way to start you thinking about an Italian summer holiday than a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a Lugana from the shores of lake Garda ? Round it off with a Verdeca with no name (just a number)  that I guarantee you will not forget.  431 will be a favourite.

Our reds concentrate on the Puglia region of southern Italy. For those in the know, this means big, heavy (repeat – very heavy) full bodied wines. And to expand your taste buds, not a Primitivo in the box. Try the Negroamro or the Nero di Troia. Two varieties with similar characterises to Primitivo. We also bring an award-winning Montepulciano which is a completely different game. Lighter and more tannic, this wine will feel more sophisticated after the big round bombshells from the south. We also added a Grenache from Spain that was so good for the money, we couldn’t leave it behind.

So enjoy the gold medal winners (without the acceptance speech)

I would describe this one as a dry fruit salad served in a stone bowl. Great balance of acidity and fruit makes this wine one of Aperittivo's top sellers.

The first thing you notice is the low acidity level so Be Careful, this wine disappears from your glass very, very quickly. Fruity and very dry, this is a light drink ideal for white fish or salad. Pecorino is a wine for everybody.

Lemons, green fruits, and a silver medal. The acidity makes this wine very fresh, and having a pit of an oily finish making it great for salmon, goat cheese or even a butter tikka !

A black fruit Grenache monster with an impressive price / quality ratio. This is a very full bodied red that will go best with lamb, burgers, or red meat with heavy sauce.

If there was ever any doubt about the Prague Wine trophy Gold medal award quality, how about 95 points from Decanter ? Cherry, blackberry and a little pepper. A first class Montepulciano ready for any decerning pallet.

Mike's Tip

The next medal winner please ! This Prague Gold Premium winner of Negroamaro is a full bodied red with a very soft, almost sweet finish. Those bold Primitivo lovers will find a similar flavor here, with dark, ripe jammy fruits that will fill your mouth with every sip.

Something about these wines from the south of Italy that collects hardware. Prague Gold Premium winner and another mouthful of jammy, cherries and plums. This grape is similar to Primitivo and Negroamaro, so be ready for full and round.
