Box: January 2022

2022 Here we go!

Here we go into another new year.

IWCoK is as excited as always to hunt out new wines that will bring happiness and joy to so many peoples weekend dinners (or Tuesday night sofa and Netflix lethargy) . What ever works for you, we have a selection this month that spans both the New and Old worlds.

Our whites start in the rolling hills just across the border in Austria. A great Veltliner is always a pleasure in January . We follow it up with a couple of Sauvignon, one of which comes from our own lands. Add in a German Bacchus for something new and finish off with a Vermentino from Sardinia with its distinctive floral pallet.

The reds have a balance of the bold and heavy, with some slightly lighter wines with more acidity and tannin. A southern Nero d’Avola and a South American Syrah fill the heavy hitter corner. Both strong and round and ready for any meal to be thrown at them. Back to Europe we have a classic pizza wine in the Barbera, and perhaps the ultimate salami co-star in a Valpolicella Superior.

Good news is even if you are locked down, this box will make any weekend better 😊

Happiness and health in 2022 !

  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS

Mike's Tip

Like the label shows, this is a light footed varietal that is clean and agile. Look for Apple and mineral tones in this highly rated wine from Austria (the kingdom of Veltliners).

Stříbrný Sauvignon Sonberk

Wine description:

  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Grape: Sauvignon
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • vivino: 3.8
  • Price: 363 Kč

Mike's Tip

A juicy Sauvignon with hints of berries you might not. Black current and elderberry dominate, followed by a less surprising grassy scent. Be ready, there is a spicey finish.

Bacchus Neuleininger Sonnenberg

Wine description:

  • Country: Germany
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • vivino: 3.6
  • Price: 265 Kč

Mike's Tip

Bacchus is a variety bred in the first half of the 20th century as a hybrid of Muller Turgau, Sylvaner and Riesling making this a wine with strong fruity flavour and a balanced mix of sugar and acidity.

Chardonnay Neuleininger Sonnenberg

Wine description:

  • Country: Germany
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • vivino: 4.0
  • Price: 265 Kč

Mike's Tip

The winemaker describes this Chardonnay as young, fresh and playful. No heavy tones despite oak aging. Light in alcohol, heavy in honey and nuts.

In Situ

Wine description:

  • Country: Chile
  • Grape: Syrah
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Mangustino
  • vivino: 3.8
  • Price: 239 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a value wine we stumbled across last year. More remarkable than the label is the area of Aconcagua where it is made. Between the mountains and the sea, this is a premium area for red wines in Chile. Trust me on this one!

Cravanzola

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Barbera
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Mangustino
  • vivino: 3.7
  • Price: 280 Kč

Mike's Tip

Barbera is the engine room of all the red wines from the acclaimed region of Piedmont in Italy. Look for a deep ruby colour, strong tannin and acidity. This wine works great with red meats.

Solea

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Bourgogne Wines
  • vivino: 3.6
  • Price: 279 Kč

Mike's Tip

What makes this southern Italian Nero d'Avola unique is the slow and delicate pressing method used. Slow pressing avoids bitter tannins and makes this wine more balanced and very full bodied.

Territorio

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Malbec
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Mangustino
  • vivino: 3.6
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

Grown at an altitude between 1600 and 2000 meters, this is one of the highest wine regions in the world. A creamy Malbec with lots of plums and dark fruit. Serve with hearty food.
