Not for beginners! Complex as a 1,000 piece puzzle. Taken from the coldest area of the Casablanca valley, this is fine balance of tropical fruit and aging. The pineapple and butter are wrapped in a golden straw color coming from one year in oak barrels. Heavy and serious.

  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Last Minute Summer surprise
  • Price: 300 Kč

Mike's Tip

Adventure. Like venturing into an unexplored place, Tannat is a grape you don't come across everyday. A bit tart, and high in tannins, look for black current and berries with a hint of oak and leather. Sound complicated ? Don't worry. This wine has collected more medals than your kids entire swim team.

Morande Sauvignon Blanc Reserva

Spicy, green and full bodied. When you get that mix of sweet, sour, earthy flavor in a good Sauvignon, it is just magic. This top of the line addition from Las Moras is just that. Bomba.

Las Moras Chardonnay Reserve

  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: The Black Box
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

When a tried this, the first thing that came to my mind was the Chiquita Banana lady! If you don’t know her, picture the quintessential Samba singer in her costume with all that fruit on her head. Bananas and pineapple – an absolute delight.

Tola Grillo

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: The Black Box
  • Price: 202 Kč

Mike's Tip

For me Grillo is a much oilier grape, with a finish that lasts a long time. Look for a bit more acidity and long tears on your glass when you swirl it around. Ideal with a cheese fondue or “white” meal with a higher % of fat.

Zorzal Malbec

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Malbec
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Best In October alias BIO
  • Price: 314 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another big wine from Zorzal. Malbec is such an easy red to drink with its soft tannin and round, chocolate finish. This one grows at an altitude of 1300m in Mendoza Argentina. The altitude and dry climate make this a naturally occurring region for biological wines as bugs and mold don't like it [up there]. Not only is it good for you, but it also saves the winery a heap of $$$ on sprays.

Zorzal Chardonnay

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Best In October alias BIO
  • Price: 314 Kč

Mike's Tip

First think to know about this wine, is there is no rush. The massive alcohol content and huge flavors will last for years. Or give this big gun a taste and order another carton to put in the cellar for special occasions. More round than fresh, but nowhere near the Chilean oaky sort that you may expect. This is a gem, be ready.

Zorzal Torrontés

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Torrontes
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Best In October alias BIO
  • Price: 314 Kč

Mike's Tip

I wanted to include a Torrontes because it is typical to the region and it has a specific floral taste with a touch of fruit that will leave you searching. Think passion fruit and pineapple and top it off with a touch of acidity. lite and enjoyable.

Más Polit Negre 2010

Wine description:

  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 431 Kč

Mike's Tip

Flesh and leather, wood and fruit. This wine hits well above its weight. A blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this has a very specific nose that some may not find pleasant at all when you open it. But give it some time, and all those flavors come together. One of the top reds we have tried in 2016!

Alfredo Roca Syrah 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain

  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 279 Kč

Mike's Tip

Full of blueberry and plums and very, very deep ruby color.. Syrah goes well with game or other heavy meats and strong stews. This is the kind of wine you pair with meals when you don't need to be productive afterwards :-)

Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain

  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 227 Kč

Mike's Tip

Pleanty of fruit here and sweet tannins that almost jump out of the glass ;-). A great wine for burgers or other grilled red meat. Some also drink this red slightly chilled on a hot day. Experiment for yourself.

Cathar Joven 2014

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 272 Kč

Mike's Tip

Tempranillo for me is a hit or miss wine. Sometimes amazing, sometimes useful only for making svarak. Cather definitely falls into the former with a very mature well balanced taste unbelievably coming from a wine that next saw a barrel. Yes 100% steel tank. A wine that will go with most any food be it Wednesday meat loaf or Friday tapas. Easy and enjoyable.

Verus Sauvignon Blank 2014

Wine description:

  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 297 Kč

Mike's Tip

Verus in latin means Truth, and this is as simple and fresh example of fine Sauvignon as you will find. Crisp and full of gooseberry and nettles, it leave that little earthy taste on the pallet after you swallow. This is the wild flavor Sauvignon gives!

Verus Furmint 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Slovenia
  • Grape: Furmint
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Rich pickings
  • Price: 297 Kč

Mike's Tip

Known in Slovenia as Šipon, is a variet more known in Hungary for making sweet tokaji wines but also now more and more common as a dry wine. The special bit is that Furmint is very high in acidity and often extract, making it full of flavor yet still fresh and low in alcohol. Will go great with Asian food or simple grilled pork.

Holzer Gruner Veltliner 2015

  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: Best of BOX, Rich pickings
  • Price: 297 Kč

Mike's Tip

Wow, this one come off a steep slope of red rocks in the Wagram, the home region of this variety. Given the warmer climate, red varieties are also grown here. Look for a real mix of fruits and honey. Complicated, very difficult to identify and 100% delicious.

Las Moras Black Label 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Cabernet Saugvinon
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 395 Kč

Mike's Tip

Believe it or not, this was the most expensive Cabernet Franc based wine made in San Juan in 2012.
Fortunately for us it was cut with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (so it would fir in out box :-). Coming from NW corner of Argentina, and growing in the foothills of the Andes. This is a hot dry area, but with a high elevation. I admit I am a Cabernet Franc lover, but this full bodies blend will not disappoint even the most discerning taste.

Las Moras Reserva

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

Aged in French oak for 12 months, this is a mature but freshly bottled full bodied wine that will keep for a good few years in the cellar. I am not a big Syrah fan myself, but I do appreciate it when it is blended. This was all Syrah in the nose but with a well tamed spicy character that will not over power you. Don't be fooled by it's age, this is a smooth character with plenty of alcohol to remind you in the morning .

Care Ciranza

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 228 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another amazing value. Even though this is Bodegas Añadas entry level wine, the reputation of the winery has placed them in some of the best Spanish restaurants in the world. This is a modern winery that hasn't forgotten about tradition. Care is the ancient name used by the Romans to refer to the town of Cariñena, where this winery is found. This wine tastes of red fruit and lots of pricy, mineral hints from the Crianza.

Malbec Alma Mora Las Moras 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Malbec
  • Alcohol: 13,5
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 239 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another great wine from Argentina. Don't take this the wrong way, but this was voted the "most consistently drinkable Super market wine in Argentina". Good enough for me! Not too jammy, this Malbec has a big red and black fruit taste with enough tannin to stand up to a big piece of protein.

Dogajolo Rosso 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

This "Super Tuscan" may look familiar to some of you. I remember one bike trip in the mountains with some of you where this was on the table, and seeing this in Austrian markets many a time. This is a Sangiovese based wine, the the remaining 30% is a bit of a mystery as it varies every year depending on the harvest. Fresh and fruity, take this one with cold cuts and pork. A Vivino score of 3.6 means this wine is going to please.

Sileni Sauvignon Blanc

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 360 Kč

Mike's Tip

It is not often that we pick up tips from our members - this one was a real winner. Many thanks to Tomasz for the New Zealand tip of the year. This Sauvignon is exactly what you expect from a wine from that part of the world. The winery describes it as "Zingy"
and I couldn't think of a better descriptive word that few will understand :-) Think gooseberry and grass - perfect for fish of all types.

Prechtl Gruner Veltliner

Wine description:

  • Country: Austria
  • Grape: Grüner Veltliner
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 369 Kč

Mike's Tip

I love Veltlin for its mineral, earthy taste. Not really what I found here as this one was all about one thing - HONEY. A great sweet, acidic mix in the mouth that kept me coming back to bees and trees. This wine is a mouthfull, so don't expect a light drink. Bold and very round, pick your food wisely - pork or salmon.

Chardonnay Morande Pionero 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Chile
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 211 Kč

Mike's Tip

OMG. I never thought I would say it, but a Chilean Chardonnay that I like ! What is happening here ?
First and most importantly, this wines never touched a barrel. Clean, fruity and much more the European style, this is another south American bargain. (to all our American friends who like it oakey - sorry ;-)

Pacha Mama Torrontes

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Torrontes
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Box: A New Best Old Friend
  • Price: 207 Kč

Mike's Tip

Of all the whites, this was my best value pick. You could not ask for a better nose on this organic Torrontes appropriate names "Mother Earth". Fresh and flowery like a good Torrontes should, this white wine variety is coming to define the Argentinian wine market and for reason. Take this wine with light food as it is very subtle. Avoid anything spicy or fatty cheese.
