Box: February 2023

Golden Tuesday

February is a Golden Tuesday (at least the Golden bit is accurate..) Our February box is full of Prague Gold medal winners. Lots to look forward to.

Our white’s this golden 2nd month of the year concentrate on Veltin. Two Austrian entries (we all agree, they do the best Veltlins of anyone) bring two different styles, one fruitier, and the second more full of mineral flavour. This months “out pf nowhere” winner is the Austrian Chardonnay. A fun presentation but a serious contender a; the same. We round out our whites with (another) medal winner, this time a classic Grillo from the south of Italy.

Our reds also bring you’re the hardware with a gold winning Italian and Spanish entry. Be it a fruity Sangiovese, the earthy Tempranillo, or the over the top full body of a Primitivo and Negroamaro blend, we say gold, gold, gold and all bases covered !

And why golden “Tuesday” ? Well…., February is the second month, and I got a 1 in 7 chance that you are reading this on the “right”day 😊

Just enjoy it and be safe.

What a gold medal wining Veltliner should taste like ! With subtle hints of pepper and melon, this refreshing wine will go great with any fish you put on the table tonight.

Mike's Tip

Despite the name, there is nothing funny about a gold medal winning wine, and this chardonnay is serious ! Hints of pears an citrus makes this an old world chardonnay. So thin fish rather than Mexican food for the mix.

Mike's Tip

Lemons, green fruits, and a silver medal. The acidity makes this wine very fresh, and having a pit of an oily finish making it great for salmon, goat cheese or even a butter tikka !

Riporta

  • Price: 180 Kč

Mike's Tip

A straight forward Sangiovesse that took gold in Prague in the 2018 competition. Granat red and red juicy fruit makes this a great value at the price. Look for the vanilla after letting this one breath for a bit.

Gran Sello

Wine description:

  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Aperittivo.cz
  • vivino: 3.5
  • Price: 207 Kč

Mike's Tip

A little smoke, spice and cassis in this medium bodied red. Plums on top, then the other subtle tones come out after giving it a good bit of air. A decent all rounder perfect for the dinner of "what ever" on Wednesday night.

Bardolino

  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Aperittivo.cz
  • vivino: 3.4
  • Price: 165 Kč

Mike's Tip

When you are honest and not trying to be more than a simple red blend to go with a pizza or a sandwich at a fair price - it looks like this.

Villa Barcaroli

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Montepulciano
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Foltýn Wine
  • vivino: 3.8

Mike's Tip

Chocolate and coffee over a bed of red fruit. Full bodied base with a touch of tannin. Best served with red meat, stews or grilled vegetables. Easy to drink, but packs a punch.
