Big and bigger

Big and bold. That is what we are accustomed to with Bulgarian wines, and the reason we come back to the region year after year. But is there a limit to the power of these wines  ? IWCoK is going to test het limits this month with a number of BIG hitters.

First point of note is  we are presenting wines for the first time from one of BGs premier wineries – Eduardo Mirolio. This historic Italian family has a long tradition in wine making not only in Italy. Their offering is as varied as it is rich, be it from light bio whites to much more full bodied  entries. I am sure you will enjoy them all.

We focused our whites on the traditional varieties that we know that Bulgaria does well. Chardonnay and Muscat. But as a big surprise, we have an exceptionally elegant pinot noir (yes you heard me right) Blanc de Noir. This is a white wine made from the same grapes as its more famous red variety that is thick, complex and relatively rare. A big something special for your dinner of fish or chicken.

The reds give you a span from the lovely and light Gramatika made from the Melnik grape, to two absolutely huge wines from Merul. If these wines had a higher alcohol content, they would have to be port! – This means HUGE….. Therefor we need to warn you, these reds are not the pop and go type. They need TO BREETH. Like seriously. If you are after a big mouth full, then best to remember in the morning to pop the cork before leaving the house. Giving these some air throughout the day will only make them better.

Back to Bulgaria with big names and big content – always a pleasure !!!

Yellow green in color, this one of those rare finds that just blows you away for the price . This mix of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Riesling will be treat you to a balance of sugar and acidity and a long long finish. Value wine - TOP TOP TOP.

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption

Mike's Tip

Simple and free of everything other than grapes, this is a simple natural wine that will keep your head clear. Nice grassy tones even if the finish is a bit shorter than we would like. Serve ice cold!

Blanc de Noir

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Pinot noir
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

White pinot noirs are not something you come across everyday, and when you do they are normally something special. Deep and complex, this is a satiny wine that will stay on the pallet for a while. Red fruits and apples ready for salmon or cheddar cheese.

Muscato Ottonel

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Muscat
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Muscat is normally a sure thing in Bulgaria, and this on is no exception. Aged in steel, this fresh honey filled whine brings that perfume to the nose and a long finish. I like Muscat with pizza, so think dripping cheese and you will be fine.

Merul Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cabernet Saugvinon
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 299 Kč

Mike's Tip

LET THIS WINE BREATH and get ready for a ton of bricks. Although is says 15.5% on the label, we all think this is a conservative estimate. This wine needs a few hours to breath before it gets in your glass. Jammy yet dry with a light tannin, smoky oak and leather dominate. pair with meat and serve a little cooler than you are probably used to.

Merul Cabernet Selection

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 299 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another Bulgarian atom bomb. Just in case you missed it, let this wine breath before drinking. The Merlot and Mavrut make this wine a bit fruitier and more tannic than the Cabernet, and all in all a better food wine. I suggest you don't kill this bottle in one go, as it will be even better the next day.

Gramatic Melnik 55

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Melnik
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 299 Kč

Mike's Tip

Compared to other red Bulgarian atom bombs, this wine is nearly a detox :-). Melmik was Winston Churchill's favorite red variety for good reason. Medium bodied, light acidity make Melnik a great wine for pork or pasta. A great anytime wine

A Good Year Rose

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Light and refreshing rose wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: VínaBG
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

Brought back by popular demand. The Good Year range from Medi Valley were some of our most popular wines in the past 3 years. Well balanced wines at great prices. This mix of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah is a mix of red fruits and great for salads. Another hit from the team.
