A New Best Old Friend

Sometimes when we are out there “in the trenches”, doing our monthly wine hunt, we forget to look in the most obvious places. So after talking about partnering up with this months (new) supplier for year, we did just that. So with no further delay, we are happy to introduce this months partner Cellarius – possibly the oldest and most visible Vinoteka is all Prague.

You may not know the name, but you have certainly seen it. Lucerna pasaz, just across from the entrance to Lucerna (where you haven’t missed a Vondrackova Christmas show for the past 10 years). The thing here is that Celarius has been in Lucerna even longer than Helena. An unbelievable 20 years non-stop. That is a lot of time to build a business, and the selection is testament to that time.

What finally got us together was a request from our member Tomasz. He had to get hold of “That wine” and of course, we had to do our best leading up to our first annual customer service survey ;-). More seriously, we realized that we had met the owner a number of times at various events, said we should get “into bed together” a number of times, and now finally had the perfect opportunity to do so.

We deliberately tried to give Europe a break this month, and given the huge selection we found, decided to concentrate on one Argentinian winery. From the light and flowery Torrontes at a bargain of a price, to the deap, full Cabernet reserves, they had a stunning portfolio from end to end. We added in a surprise red from Spain that we couldn’t put down, and a Chianti that I have come across many times in Austria and in some Cesky Chalupky that some of you may recognize.

So next time you are passing through Lucerna for that concert, or maybe just a quick gawk at Cerny’s “Vaclav” , swing by your best new (old) wine friend . There is something there for everybody.

Pacha Mama Torrontes

  • Grape: Torrontes
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS

Mike's Tip

Of all the whites, this was my best value pick. You could not ask for a better nose on this organic Torrontes appropriate names "Mother Earth". Fresh and flowery like a good Torrontes should, this white wine variety is coming to define the Argentinian wine market and for reason. Take this wine with light food as it is very subtle. Avoid anything spicy or fatty cheese.

Sileni Sauvignon Blanc

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 360 Kč

Mike's Tip

It is not often that we pick up tips from our members - this one was a real winner. Many thanks to Tomasz for the New Zealand tip of the year. This Sauvignon is exactly what you expect from a wine from that part of the world. The winery describes it as "Zingy"
and I couldn't think of a better descriptive word that few will understand :-) Think gooseberry and grass - perfect for fish of all types.

Prechtl Gruner Veltliner

Wine description:

  • Country: Austria
  • Grape: Grüner Veltliner
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 369 Kč

Mike's Tip

I love Veltlin for its mineral, earthy taste. Not really what I found here as this one was all about one thing - HONEY. A great sweet, acidic mix in the mouth that kept me coming back to bees and trees. This wine is a mouthfull, so don't expect a light drink. Bold and very round, pick your food wisely - pork or salmon.

Chardonnay Morande Pionero 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Chile
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 211 Kč

Mike's Tip

OMG. I never thought I would say it, but a Chilean Chardonnay that I like ! What is happening here ?
First and most importantly, this wines never touched a barrel. Clean, fruity and much more the European style, this is another south American bargain. (to all our American friends who like it oakey - sorry ;-)

Dogajolo Rosso 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

This "Super Tuscan" may look familiar to some of you. I remember one bike trip in the mountains with some of you where this was on the table, and seeing this in Austrian markets many a time. This is a Sangiovese based wine, the the remaining 30% is a bit of a mystery as it varies every year depending on the harvest. Fresh and fruity, take this one with cold cuts and pork. A Vivino score of 3.6 means this wine is going to please.

Las Moras Reserva

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

Aged in French oak for 12 months, this is a mature but freshly bottled full bodied wine that will keep for a good few years in the cellar. I am not a big Syrah fan myself, but I do appreciate it when it is blended. This was all Syrah in the nose but with a well tamed spicy character that will not over power you. Don't be fooled by it's age, this is a smooth character with plenty of alcohol to remind you in the morning .

Care Ciranza

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 228 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another amazing value. Even though this is Bodegas Añadas entry level wine, the reputation of the winery has placed them in some of the best Spanish restaurants in the world. This is a modern winery that hasn't forgotten about tradition. Care is the ancient name used by the Romans to refer to the town of Cariñena, where this winery is found. This wine tastes of red fruit and lots of pricy, mineral hints from the Crianza.

Malbec Alma Mora Las Moras 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Malbec
  • Alcohol: 13,5
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 239 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another great wine from Argentina. Don't take this the wrong way, but this was voted the "most consistently drinkable Super market wine in Argentina". Good enough for me! Not too jammy, this Malbec has a big red and black fruit taste with enough tannin to stand up to a big piece of protein.
