Box: January 2016

Balkan Style

Every January all the worlds marketing experts have the same job: to come up with that special reason why 2016 is going to be even better and brighter than all that fun we had last year. In the case of IWCoK, this is just sooo easy. What better way than to start off the new year “Balkan Style” with a box full of Slovenian and Bulgarian wines ? I can think of none!

Having made two trips to Bulgaria in the second half of last year, I had plenty of time to do some searching for that latest thing and to test out a few new wines from a couple old favorites . This included 2 days in the heart of the Thracian valley – Plovdiv.  What this part of the world does really well, are big powerful red blends in the Bordeaux style. That means lots of Merlot and Cabernet Saugnignon, and at times a “smidge” of something else. This time we brough in some Syrah to the mix, adding just a little bit of spice to 2 of the selection. We even found a Viogner that is very, very respectable which for me is a pretty rare thing for Bulgarian whites.

But having covered the “deep, dark and round” red category, we needed something to lighten things up with. This is where those floral whites from Slovenia come in handy so we went back to a tried and tested favorite region of IWCoK, Goriska Brda neighboring the Friuli region of Italy. You may remember a Rebula from a few years back, but this time we also included a Sauvignonasse (also known as Sauvignon Vert or Tocai Friuliano). Nothing like the sweet Tokai’s of Hungary, this dry white has a hint of Sauvignon acidity, but with a much softer floral finish.

So with so much to enjoy this month, lets get it going Balkan Style !

Some of you may remember the Enira 2008 with the very suspicious label we did two years back. This time we have the Reserva
that is without exaggeration - Incredible. For those of you looking for one of the best red wines from Bulgaria in the last 10 years, put this one on your must do list. Absolutely amazing.

Angel Viogner

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Viogner
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Prowine
  • Price: 240 Kč

Mike's Tip

I didn't expect to find a Bulgarian white of this quality. To be completely truthful, I am not a big fan of the white wines in Bulgaria but this one stood out for it's fruity and dry style. Although Viogner may not be familiar to you, this grape is the queen of Rhone valley whites - Condrieu. This is a full bodied white full of peaches and pears.

Arcobaleno 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Prowine
  • Price: 229 Kč

Mike's Tip

From the packaging to the taste, this cuvee is
everything you expect from a top Bulgarian producer. Excellent balance and soft tannins, this is a wine for dinner with your best friends or sipping on the sofa. Worth every crown and a bargain at this price. Highly recommended.

Angel Syrah and Merlot

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Prowine
  • Price: 240 Kč

Mike's Tip

You are going to want some big hearty steak or gulas type stew for this one. Full of tannin and pepper and 14.5% content, this is a real mouthful. Be careful! This wine needs to breath. I highly recommended to let this one breath for at least 2 hours before drinking or decant.

Quercus Rebula

Wine description:

  • Country: Slovenia
  • Grape: Ribola
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Vína-slovinsko.cz
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another white grape that you wont find outside of Slovenia and Friuli. Made to be drank young, you get a slightly higher acidity and a good dose of flowers and grass. If you get a chance to try one that has been on oak, the acidity will be balanced with a nutty oak
flavor that is really something special. Have to admit that Rebula from Goriska Brda goes down as one of our favorite summer whites.

Tcherga 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Bulgaria
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Prowine
  • Price: 185 Kč

Mike's Tip

The first time I saw this wine was in the departure hall in Sofia. Needless to say a little suspicious with its' Balkan carpet design. Forget the carpet and try this honest and respectable red blend from Domain Menada. Based in Stara Zagora, I expect us to be hearing more about this winery as they have already done well in France and are expanding all the time.

Quercus Sauvignon Blanc

Wine description:

  • Country: Slovenia
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Vína-slovinsko.cz
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a fresh, acidic Sauvignon with all the hallmarks of the grape hailing from a grassy region. Why the screw top ? Sauvignon Blanc from the steel tank was one of the first varieties first to leave the cork behind and all for a simple reason, this wine doesn't benefit from age. It is made to be drank young when it still has all it's power and spark. Perfect with cold fish or something in a shell.

Quercus Sauvignonasse

Wine description:

  • Country: Slovenia
  • Grape: Sangiovese
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Vína-slovinsko.cz
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Probably the most complicated wine in this
months box. Unlike Sauvignon Blanc that can have a very heavy mineral base and high acidity, this variety is much softer making for an easier drink. Not sweet, but nice subtle floral tones and found only in this region! This variety can only be found in This is not a bold wine, so don't match it with any strong cheese or fish. Think cod or soft cheese.
