Strictly Bordeaux

With all the mania around Star Dance, we decided to do something very classy this month and celebrate the the Ball season with some high end drop. So in the name of all those celebrity dance programs that nobody actually admits they watch apart from your mother, we introduce the IWCoK version of the Opera Ball – “Strictly Bordeaux”.

Few would argue that Bordeaux is the most famous and valued wine region in the world. Where else is there so much hype about what a wine will be, that you can actually buy futures (en primeur). I recommend the film Red Obsession if you are really that interested in how the region works, and why the value of these wines has skyrocketed in the past 15 years.

We are going to stay a bit closer to earth with our box, but still give you a great sample of what the region can offer. First and foremost are the red blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These are the primary grapes of the region and account for about 75% of the areas harvest. Indeed you can find Petit Verdot and Malbec, but these very much the minority. Exceptionally dry or more fruity, you will find a huge choice of taste by just mixing the geography and blend of these few grapes. Now up to you to taste our pics and decide for yourself where your preference lies.

The white wines are dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. These produce again very dry, “citrusy” whites that are best served with sea food. Sardines on the grill of even fish and chips will not disappoint. The blend we included with Colombard offers a much easier taste, that need not be paired with a meal to go down easy while you are waltzing to an old Strauss “hit”.

We recommend you take out your best glasses for this box – both the wines and you deserve it!

Mike's Tip

This cuvee of Colombard & Ugni Blanc is a rare combination indeed. Both varieties are grown in very small quantities but produce a balanced and less aggressive flavor. Much more peach than grapefruit. A great wine for ham and salami, or even a lemon tart!

Château Taussin 2014

Wine description:

  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Unmistakably the driest of all the reds this month, I found a mix of black fruit, vanilla and green pepper. Deep red in color, this is still a relatively fresh wine intended to be drank young. Remember this is Bordeaux, so you still have 2-3 years to go.

Château L’Oiseau 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 280 Kč

Mike's Tip

For those who are looking for a happy middle road through the hills of Bordeaux white, this Semillon blend is far less acidic than Sauvignon. Semillon is one of the three officially allowed white grapes of Bordeaux, this is a heavy, oily grape with a dominating flavor that makes for a very balanced wine. Sophisticated, but very approachable.

Château Beauvillage 2010

  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 310 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a classic example of a full bodied left bank Bordeaux. Masculine and almost black in color, this is a mix of blackberry and green pepper indeed suitable for vegetarians. Wine Enthusiast award this wine a score of 88, for its rough nature. A real wild spirit.

Château Les Reuilles 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 220 Kč

Mike's Tip

This 100% Suavignon Blanc will explain to you everything you need to know about citrus taste in wine! Very fresh with hints of grass, a white with more typical characteristics from the region would be hard to fine. If you don't like aggressive whites, make sure you pair this one up with a meal or white meat and or salad.

Château Tour du Moulin 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 308 Kč

Mike's Tip

All together the most complicated blend in the box, this very dry red dominated by Merlot also includes the very rarely used (but officially permitted) Malbec grape. This wine comes from Fronsac, which lies just 40km to the north of Bordeaux. It was a strategic location for Charlemagne back in the day because of its market built in 769. Tour du Moulin was probably on his table back then!

Monteberiot – La Closerie 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

My suggestion for this wine is to open it in the morning, and drink it that night. Letting this wine breath completely changes the character from a rather dry, tannic wine to one of balance and subtle black fruit flavor. The winemaker practices what he calls "reasonable agriculture", which mean not over working the land. See if this wine puts you in balance with nature ;-)

Château les Anguilleys 2011

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 530 Kč

Mike's Tip

This 50/50 blend from vines more than 40 years old is a true ambassador of the Medoc. Fantastic balance of tannin and fruit. A little lighter than some of the others in the box, but what it lacks in color it makes up for with a very refined and delicate taste. 4 stars out of 5 in my phone !
