Mike's Tip

We hadn't had a Sauvignon Blanc in our offer for a while so wanted to mix things up a bit. Light and fresh with a flowery sent. Will go great with chicken or fish. Just watch the minerality here as you may sense them in the finish.

  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine

Mike's Tip

Very elegant, round and fruity. Also having spent some time in barrel, this really offers something unique for the Languedoc. A quality you will find for normally twice the price.

Chateau Bas d’ Aumelas

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing rose wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Languedoc.cz
  • Box: A Languedoc History Lesson
  • Price: 298 Kč

Mike's Tip

Southern French rose can be so predictable given the use of Grenache in most all of them. I found this one to be lighter than most and missing the tannic finish that I expected. This makes it all the easier to drink, and a great sipping wine for sitting outside. Extraordinary? No, but great bang for the buck!

Esprit d’ Automne

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Languedoc.cz
  • Box: A Languedoc History Lesson
  • Price: 320 Kč

Mike's Tip

This time it is Syrah giving it that peppery taste in this Bio wine Borie de Maurel. This is a serious red that should be served with “real food”. Not the wine you take out for sipping on the sofa. And, this wine REALLY needs to be opened a good 2 hours before drinking, or decant . Failure here will make the wine much more bitter. Give it some time to open up – it is well worth the wait.

Mild and exceptionally well balanced at this price. Made from 2 regional grapes that are less commonly known (Grenache Noir and Carignan), it comes across far more subtle than the normal Grenache reds that are typical of the region. Watch this wine. At this price and presentation (it looks bloody elegant) I will not be surprised if we see it again in some Christmas stockings….

Felines Jourdan

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Languedoc.cz
  • Box: A Languedoc History Lesson
  • Price: 245 Kč

Mike's Tip

What would a Languedoc box be without a Picpoul?! Answer: like going to New York and not eating a hot dog! This is the original white grape. The nose is all citrus fruit and the taste is just fresh, slightly acidic with short finish. A great wine with fish, asparagus and with chicken on the BBQ in the first days of summer.

Malbec

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Malbec
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Languedoc.cz
  • Box: A Languedoc History Lesson
  • Price: 215 Kč

Mike's Tip

Wow, almost a pity to be drinking this wine so young. Chocolate round in the mouth, full and heavy. If you don’t know Malbec, think of it as a Cabernet Sauvignon on steroids! My only criticism of this wine was the age, but for and entry level wine this was fantastic. Just be warned, if you like your red wines to be more tannic, Malbec is probably not the grape for you. This one is heavy!

Not knowing better, I would have tipped this wine in a blind test to be a Syrah Cabernet Saugvignon blend. The age is a bit of a tell tale as the flavor is still quite young, but the pepper and finish work quite well for this every day wine. Pick your food carefully with this one as the flavor is quite intense. Chicken not recommended.
