Box: May 2015

Romantic May

So what makes May’s box so romantic. Well, we start with something a little exotic. Think of the hotty you see while you are on holiday, dark hair, dark eyes and a tattoo – dead sexy. Then zoom forward 25 years when you are settles and want something a bit more traditional. One that is well dressed and will look and be a fantastic companion at any age.

Your part of the establishment now and want something just a bit more conservative. In May we have your whole life romance covered!

For that exotic “wild side”, we have gone for some truely interesting varieties from the just being re-discovered Romania. Remember that Romania is one of the oldest wine growing countries in the world, and is still today one of the biggest producers. That alone doesn’t say much, but the varieties being re-discovered are amazing. Our first red, “Glia” in Romanian means Mother Earth, and we were so impressed with this “Babska Black” (really, that is the variety) that we loaded up. From the same small winery we have our first Sarba as well. This grape was traditionally considered a “Working man’s” wine because of it’s light mineral taste and low alcohol, but we thought it worthy for our table or summer pic-nic. And the girl at the bar with the tattoo ? That would have to be “Mustoasa” from the same Balla Geza winery that Jancis Robinson so raves about.

Fast forward a few years and you are having the boss and family over for a BBQ. You want to serve something that will go great with whatever they may be nibbling and something they can recognize at first glance and won’t make a face at. Start with a delightfully fresh Pinot Noir Rose from the south of France. Light, tangy and Bio, the chance of this one not having something to offer everybody is ZERO. This is your ticket to the corner office.

If you want to tease just a bit pull out the full bodied Chardonnay from Paparuda. So min stay that they may not even recognize it is Romanian too. And finally to make that big impression, you pull out a classic 2007 Bordeaux to go with the steak. Traditional and well dressed, this is a wine to impress even the stodgiest.

So May offers new things to fall in love with as well as some sure things to guarantee a relaxing afternoon or evening.  It’s like a whole relationship in just 6 bottles and this time, we know you picked a winner.

A very old and little known variety, Babeasca Neagra roughly translates to "Grandmotherly Black" and comes from the Moldova region of north Eastern Romania. Despite its name, Glia ia a light bodied, cherry flavored wine that will be calm on the pallet. Many compare this grape to Pinot Noir and Grenache, but it reminded me of a Valpolicella. We liked it - a lot! This will be a great with red meat.

Monser Šarba 2012

  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Floral sweet semidry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: KASSIMEX
  • Price: 149 Kč

We went back to "La Belle Epoque" with Romanian wine with this one. Sarba is typically a very aromatic wine, meaning it has a very big nose :-) and this time it is less fruity but herbal. Low in alcohol and a little bit higher sugar count means this is a semi dry wine that will go well with most foods. Serve cold, drink young and enjoy something you HAVE NEVER had before!

Monteberiot 2007

  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Chez Greg Père et Fils Praha
  • Price: 330 Kč

This is my kind of Bordeaux blend. An 80/20 mix of Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon for me gives that perfect balance of tannin and flavor perfect for any meat on the grill. Technically, this is not a true Bordeaux but comes from the lands just north in the Cotes de Bourg. And although we have the 2007, this wine is a gold medal winner in 2004 in Paris. Great value for money and very, very classy.

Paparuda Chardonnay Rezerva 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: Romania
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13,85%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: KASSIMEX
  • Price: 290 Kč

This full bodied 100% Chardonnay from the plain around Timisoara gives you a good idea example of what a little oak and time can do. Firm acidity but a strong vanilla flavor makes this a very full and rounded wine. The Paparuda range comes from the same Italian family that makes all the Recas wines, so quality is guaranteed.

Pinot Rose Begude 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Pinot noir
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing rose wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: ENO vysněná vína
  • Price: 229 Kč

This wine comes from a small family owned winery in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Specializing in organic farming has led to consistent wines of the highest quality. This Pinot Noir rose is exceptionally fresh and tasty, with lots of strawberry and cranberry flavor. Dry as bone and just like the clay soil it came from. This one will be a hit!

Balla Geza Cuvee Diorit 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: Romania
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,37%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: KASSIMEX
  • Price: 264 Kč

This is a very complicated one. The Pinot comes out front being quite spicy, but the finish was so short, you forget it was even there. Well rounded and tannic, this is a great companion for dark meat and stew (think goulash!). These vineyards lie right up against the Hungarian border, and has got a lot of attention from western wine gurus. Open before drinking. This one needs some time.

Balla Geza Mustoasa de Maderat 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Romania
  • Grape: Muscat
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: KASSIMEX
  • Price: 199 Kč

Fresh, low in alcohol, high acidity and very refreshing. This is what Balla Geza from the Arad region bordering Hungary brings. I tried this wine on one of my trips to Bucharest, and found it to be a great starter wine on a hot afternoon. This wine should be drank cold and as an appetizer or with fish. This isn't one for the sofa in the evening.
