Southern Comfort

When we go South, we go all the way down – welcome back to South African Wines in April. We are re-visiting some of the most known wines of the region. Prepare for crisp, fresh whites and fruity and peppery reds.

Whites from this part of the world have to start with a Chenin Blanc. Crisp and full of fresh mineral characteristics, these are great wines to start off within the evening. Next we (have to) move to a chardonnay. Grown all over the world, this classic white grape comes in so many styles and we hope we found one less typical for you to test. We also added a surprise white, that I guarantee few of you even knew existed (even though you have drank it many a time….)

Reds of course have to start with a Pinotage, and round out with a couple of Bordeaux blends on a familiar Cabernet Sauvignon base. Experiment with these earthy, peppery wines with anything in your kitchen. They are versatile and will stand up to anything you can throw at them. And if you just want to relax with a familiar friend, we threw in a Primitivo just in case.

So even though April so far seems to be a combo of summer seaside and winter alpine temperatures, IWCoK’s “Southern Hospitality” will put you just right.

This is an acclaimed blend with A LOT of character. Think of everything green you could put into a white blend and you have your starting point. Gooseberry, kiwi and pepper make this a mouthful. Serve cold and with goat cheese.

Probably your first white Sangiovese ever, and what a surprise. Bold with a touch of honey and apricot. Will do great with any starters you put on the table, and that includes a plank of nachos!

Much more a European chardonnay than of the Americas, this is a delicate and dry wine with no oak or butter. Expect fresh and you won't be disappointed.

Welcome back to some tannins ! Berries and pepper come out front on this and I suggest that you decant to round off the edges before diving in. Serve with strong meats.

More Cab than Shiraz on the pallet, but still very dark and fruity from those blackberries inside. Will do well with foods you don't know what to pair with, so burgers and tacos please!

Sangiovese Toscana

An explosion of black and violet fruits with a touch of oak and the earth. A true Tuscan full of jammy fruit and soft tannin.

Duca di Saragnano

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine

Mike's Tip

Primitivo never disappoints. We found this one to be more subtle than expected making it easier for those who don't appreciate a typical Primitivo bomb of fruit and sweetness.
