Box: April 2023

Happy Easter

For Easter this year, we took on two themes. First was France from where we fill our box, and the second was Fresh, like the clear skies of spring. Plenty inside for a feast this Easter.

We split our whites from the South and west of Bordeaux, then finished up with two phenomenal Sauvignons from the Loire. Crisp and full of that mineral “slate” taste that makes them so distinct. Think of a Sancerre, then better. 😊 We also explore two blends on a base of Ugni Blanc, both light and playful. Get out the garden furniture and enjoy them over the weekend sun.

The reds offer a huge variety. From the very delicate Cabernet Franc from Saumur full of cherries and red current, to the BRUTAL, in your face reality of Thor’s mix of Negroamaro and Primitivo. Two extremes that sit firmly on either side of the fence. If you are feeling a bit less divisive, the Merlot from Bordeaux or blend from Maubet will be a perfect mid-week tranquilizer.

So if this Easter is about the eggs, holiday or the bunny, we got you covered for all the options.

This blend of less common varieties Colombard and Ugni blanc, has a strong nose, but very balanced pallet. Very easy to drink and a surprise hit at our house and with our friends.

This is a dry and fruity blend of grapefruit and lemon. Fresh and a bit tart, this wine is best served (very) cold and ideally with light seafood with plenty of salt.

Mike's Tip

A blend of exotic sounding varieties of the south of France. Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng, and (ok, not so exotic) Sauvignon, bring a strong citrus presentation and long finish.

My "Wow" wine of April. The winemaker describes this Touraine sauvignon as "Intense and Crunchy". I could not agree more. A fantastic value.

Little red fruits! This is a mix of tannat and merlot making it a great red meat wine with just enough acidity cut through the fat and bring out the best of the protein. No need to fuss with this one, it is ready for anything.

Carmenere Arrazuriz

Wine description:

  • Country: Chile

  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Kupmeto.cz
  • vivino: 3.7
  • Price: 215 Kč

Mike's Tip

Camenere is a dark, smokey mysterious grape that always brings a bit of the wild west to table. Look for tones of liquorice, mint and other spices decorating a big "meaty" red.

Thor

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Mangustino
  • vivino: 3.7
  • Price: 255 Kč

Mike's Tip

Yes, it is just like Thor's hammer. A huge (from the bottle, the mouth and the alcohol content), brash, blend of Negroamaro and Primitivo (Zinfandel). There is nothing subtle about this one. Open at your own risk ;-)

La Galante

  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Vinodome

Mike's Tip

A young Bordeaux meant to be drank while fresh. Best with salami or grilled meat, medium body and tannin. Easy to enjoy any day of the week.
