Corona del Toro

As we slowly approach the end of  what has been something new for all of us, we decided to celebrate our upcoming freedom with the Crown of the Bull – or a box of Spanish wine from a Top Secret Spanish source.

Our white wines this month focus on Verdejo. This is a very floral and aromatic wine, that will first take you to fields of flowers before coming around to the citrus trees. Grown in the Rueda region, they they are generally drank young and are very light in color. This is partly down to the fact the verdejo grapes are normally harvested in the cool night air, meaning they start the wine process are a lower temperature and less oxidation .  Go straight to the Caballero de Olmedo – this is an absolute delight and offers exceptional value at the price.

If we ever had a competition of which IWCoK box had the highest alcohol content, The Bull’s Crown would probably be at the top. The 3 Tempranillo in this months offer are all absolutely HUGE. Big, brash reds full of fruit and flavor. These wines were not made for chicken or pork – they need big BIG pieces of meat or heavy sauce. And important with all this months reds – open them up 1 hour before the first glass. Letting heavy wines breath a little will make them a more “approachable”.  We enjoyed the Ruleles 23 over a baked eggplant smothered n tomato sauce and molten mozzarella – to die for.

We are almost out of the worst of this Corona fear, so please take this Spanish “Corona”and have it with friends ! – ENJOY IT

Not only a great Vivino rating, but a great wine at a very fair price. Verdejo is known to be floral on the nose and a bit acidic in the finish. Look for green apple, and pear with a mouth that is impressively full for a light summer white.

Fresh, acidic and a great way to open the evening as an aperitif. This blend will work great with white fish (even fried). Go for a fried seafood plate with a big mayonnaise - this is a perfect white to clean your mouth up after each bite.

Verdejo on oak main a complex and mix of summer flowers tamed by age and a bit of vanilla. Full bodied, with a touch of butter, the finish is a mix of citrus and calm accompaniment. Serve with white meat of salmon. A real beauty.

Wines from the Duero region are known to be dark, strong and full of dark fruits. This wine is no exception. Look for cherry, blackberry mixed with leather and smoke. A lot of mother earth on the nose and in the body. Serve with STRONG meat dishes. (no pork or chicken, better a burger or a steak)

This 100% Tempranillo could have been called "Power Punch". Full in your face cherry and plum, mixed with a touch of smoke and vanilla. Not a subtle wine, so pair with with smoked meats that you can enjoy eating small bits of as you sip this one and watch the sun set.

If you hadn't noticed yet, Tempranillo with a full, fruit and powerful dark red wine. Not lost in oak, so has a touch of acidity that makes it go well with cold meats, olive oil and baked vegetables. Well balanced and a full bodied mouth of dark fruit from the forest floor.

Mike's Tip

Young and still a bit edgy, but all the basics are there for a great tempranillo. These wines are made for tapas, so get out the olives, bread, butter, anchovies and salami, a couple of glasses and go OUTSIDE. Some tannins here and a bit of pepper over a base of dark fruit.
