Back to Basics
We decided to break with tradition, and give this months wine selection to an old friend and real wine professional – Roberto Bosticco. Having worked in the “trade” all his professional life, we gladly accepted his time and expertise in selecting this months wines from Wine World. We hope you enjoy Roberto’s selection
“Starting this cooperation with my friends at IWCoK, I want to start from the beginning.
In the world exist thousands of different grapes, but usually you find just ten, twenty grapes in the wines you drink regularly. Why? Simple: because these grapes are the best; the most enjoyable, tasty, and fruity. In short, the most “Complete”. A winemaker may obtain the best wines from these grapes, either to drink young and fresh or to let age in bottles or oak for years. So I will start with the “all star” grapes. But this is classic with a twist: these six wines arrive from different region of the world; sometimes classic a region, sometimes new and emerging. Let’s go to take a look:”

Mike's Tip
Sauvignon is a grape of intense feeling. Never a wine you could forget. White, but able to match a lot of different food making it unique. And Chilean quality is becoming more and more a country to look to.
Chardonnay Snoqualmie 2011

- Grape: Chardonnay
- Alcohol: 13,5%
- Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine

Mike's Tip
Chardonnay, the grapes of the best white wines in the world. Velvety, intense and full. In this case, a new area of the world that is becoming famous: the state of Washington. In the north of the USA, where the wines are born complex and intense. An area to discover, maybe starting with this beautiful chardonnay.
Merlot Bodega Sottano 2012
Wine description:
- Country: Argentina
- Grape: Merlot
- Alcohol: 14,1%
- Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: WineWorld.cz
- Price: 249 Kč
Mike's Tip
A typical purple red color as a good Merlot should be. The nose is fruity with plums and cherries but as a young wine, does not benefit from a long stay in wood. This makes it a little aggressive to the nose. However the taste does well with a long, intense, and tannic flavor. A very good price/quality ratio that I found better value than the reserve. I like it.
Riesling Reserve 2012 Alsace
Wine description:
- Country: France
- Grape: Welschriesling
- Alcohol: 12,6%
- Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: WineWorld.cz
- Price: 386 Kč
Mike's Tip
Riesling is unique, the unique grape that during the maturation increases both the sugar and acidity in the same time. The result is a wine acidic but gentle, fruity but bodied. Region is Alsace, the most typical for this wine.
Pinot Grigio Ornella Molon 2013
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Pinot grigio
- Alcohol: 12,5%
- Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Price: 228 Kč
Mike's Tip
The color is light and clear. Nose: gentle with a bit of sulfur; fruity but very very light. Taste: light again, fruity and a bit sweet, with a little bitterness at the end. Not a wine that you will remember all your life, but an acceptable north Italian white wine that is affordable and suitable for the table.
Syrah 2009
Wine description:
- Country: United States
- Grape: Syrah
- Alcohol: 13,5%
- Style: Medium-bodied red wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: WineWorld.cz
- Price: 270 Kč
Mike's Tip
Wines made from Syrah are often powerfully flavored and full-bodied. Violets, berries, chocolate and black pepper: the power of tradition. In this new American interpretation, drinkable and enjoyable.
Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2012
Wine description:
- Country: Chile
- Grape: Cabernet Saugvinon
- Alcohol: 14%
- Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: WineWorld.cz
- Price: 214 Kč
Mike's Tip
The grapes of great Bordeaux, that’s all. Family Estate Bisquertt is in the most important region of Colchagua Valley. Every wine produced from this area is rightfully known as a “jewel” of Chile. Perfect example of great traditional grape that finds new life from the so called “new world”.
Rose Jackfall 2012
Wine description:
- Country: Hungary
- Grape: Cuveé
- Alcohol: 12,6%
- Style: Light and refreshing rose wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: Boden Fine Wines
- Price: 219 Kč
Mike's Tip
