Box: October 2024

What do you Expect

What do you expect in October ? IWCoK is not a Halloween box, but October does bring a box of treats  from some old friends at Aperittivo! The best thing about Aperitivo is they love what they do and for them it is more than just a wine shop. Be it sponsorship of collaborations, these guys got their fingers in a lot of stuff, and that gives us lots to discover!

We started with a Sauvignon from the Loire that is crisp and fresh as that first fall morning when you need to scrape the ice of your car  (something you know is coming but don’t expect it. To balance the scale, we also bring a Chardonnay / Viognier mix that is rich, buttery and so relaxing, they may have dissolved a sleeping pill right inside. And yes, we bring a trophy winning Riesling from Mosel, a sweet and sour combo searched the world over.

Bringing back a Pinot Noir in no trick, but rather the first time we found one that offered a real bargain in our price range.  A baked chicken is the recipe here !. Add in a Crianza that is anything but subtle, and a natural wine that is neither red or white, and you have your October story complete.

And as always, enjoy this box with friends!

Some of you may recognise the name from the supermarket shelves, but don't despair. This is a French wine merchant with one of the largest portfolios in the industry making them a popular choice for the Gastro industry. Chardonnay and Viognier together makes a rich, long finishing wine that will be great with Asian or other spicy foods. Fish tacos = that be the match!

This is a blend of two typical Spanish varieties Macabeo and Verdejo. Both are clean and light, making for an easy to drink wine that works any time of day (yes, you can start at lunch :-) ) Best paired with light white fish or chicken on a Sunday afternoon.

Mike's Tip

If any of you were looking for a wine that doesn't discriminate, this wine is it. From the same family as Grenache (red) and Grenache Blanc (white), Grenache Gris is a naturally occurring variety found relatively rarely solely in the south of France. Look for apricot and an oily pallet similar to Viognier.

Roc d l’Abbaye

  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Aperittivo.cz
  • vivino: 4.0
  • Price: 238 Kč

Mike's Tip

It is very, VERY rare that we put a Pinot Noir in our members box, so when we do it should be something really special. A delicate grape used in making some of the worlds most expensive wines (Burgundy), this light red filled with red cherry and a little spice does exceptionally well at the price. Enjoy something new without breaking the bank!

Sceau du Prince

  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine

Mike's Tip

From the land of the "Popes Palace" (Chateauneuf du Pape), why not a Rhône blend with the "Prince's Seal" ! Like the big guy in red felt shoes drink, this is a blend of 3 varieties (Grenache, Syrah, and Mouvedre) and contains enough alcohol to make anyone religious (14.5%). These blends are always fruity and easy to drink, making them a great match to what ever burger, steak, pasta dish is on hte table.

Talento

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Aperittivo.cz
  • vivino: 3.7
  • Price: 236 Kč

Mike's Tip

From the same Spanish vineyard that previously filled our box with Ego, this cuvee of a Monastrell and Syrah base is big and fruity like you expect but at hte same time comes across very dry and light. A great value at the price and will do great with a sandwich or tapas.

Bronzeo

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Aperittivo.cz
  • vivino: 3.9
  • Price: 115 Kč

Mike's Tip

This was a surprise. No hiding the fact that this is a table wine made in some very sensible and not very romantic industrial setting. But like the Bronzeo white that gave us such great feedback, this simple, mix of everything Italian red has a great reception. Medium body, fruity and a short unremarkable finish. Perfect for when you are feeling guilty to open anything more expensive to have over a bag of chips.
