Cannonau Sorella

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cannonau
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 329 Kč

Mike's Tip

We needed at least one red this month that was thick and round enough to cut with a knife. Cannonau comes predominantly from Sardinia, and offers that mouth full that we all love. Rich and full of cherry, a sure thing for a dinner party, or to spoil yourself with watching Netflix.

Valpolicella Vicentini

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Valpolicela
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 259 Kč

Mike's Tip

Many of you may recognize the label, if not the winery. Vicentini's Soave Classico is one of our all time favorite whites from WineFood. This red coming predominantly from Corvina, is light and tannic, so a good companion to grilled meats with a a little bit of fat, or salami.

Lagrein Niklas

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 269 Kč

Mike's Tip

Remember that this is a "High Altitude" red. What that means is that in the hills of Alto Adige near the Austrian border, the reds are lighter. Lagrein is spicier than a Pinot Noir, but should still be eaten with white meat or even fish. Definitely a food wine and will not fit the bill if you are looking for a round "sipper" for the sofa.

Rosso Conero

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

This was my pick for best value for money. A bit "tangy", this mix of Montepulciano and Syrah gives a suprising full flavor for the price. Lots of tannin here, so best to have some food about, but be it chips or a steak, it will be perfect for a mid week treat.

Lugana Pasini

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 359 Kč

Mike's Tip

Evidently, wines from around lake Garda are "The" trendy thing right now in Italian wines. The minute we tried this one we needed no more convincing. Our summer of 17 favorite bar none, it offers a great balance of fruit and acidity.

Vermentino Mesa

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 269 Kč

Mike's Tip

Something different that we love to come back to, Vermentino from Sardinia what a distinct floral taste. A great wine for sipping or with food, take this one to those last days of warmth and sunshine on the balcony or garden.

Falanghina

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Falanghina
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 269 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is only the 2nd time we have had this anciant wine variety from Southern Italy in our box. A native Italian variety, this wise a distinct pronounced mineral flavor. This is a wine typically drank with fish. Calamari heaven.

Roccafiore Grechetto

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: News from Smíchov
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

Light with a distinct citrus flavor comes across your pallet with this lesser know variety. We assume that is is an anciant greek grape, that made its way across Europe a very long time ago. Clear and crisp, it will bring you back to that summer holiday by the sea.

Drusian Prosecco DOCG Extra Dry

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

One of my personal favorites of 2016. I prefer Extra Dry as it has a bit more sugar than Brut, and has a bit more fruit flavor. A delicious drink anytime, any place.

12 e Mezzo roso

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Honestly, have you ever had a bad Primitivo from Puglia ? This one does not buck the trend. Full and fruity, but not quite as heavy as some of the other Zinfandel that we have tried.
Perfect for a burger at lunch time, and finish it off that evening with some cheese.

12 e Mezzo bianco

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Think of steep cliffs dropping off into the sea.
Puglia was THE place back in the day for the Hollywood crowd. The wines were another one of the reasons to keep coming back. This Malvasia has all the classic marks you expect from the region. A lite white, it has strong hints of white flowers and is a great one to practice your knowledge of floral scents.

Montepulciano Santa Stefano DOC Mucci

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Price: 379 Kč

Mike's Tip

Of course we did a hidden treasure. This is an exceptionally round full bodied red offering a mouthful of forest fruit (berries) and just a touch of tannin at the end to clear your pallet. A true all rounder be it a special occasion or hanging out. A very easy drink.

Chianti colli Fiorentini il Cortile

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

I love Chianti because of the clarity and tannin. I think a lot of people are surprised by this. Not a big round robust wine, but something more subtle offering a balance of tannin, fruit and alcohol. Great for cold foods. Buttered bread, mortadella, salami and black olives. To die for…

Barbera Casaret DOC Abbona

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

If you are familiar with red wine from Piedmonte, you will know that his is home to some very heavy reds. This one is not so extreme, with a little lighter texture and clarity. You still get pleanty of tannin and just a taste of oak, so suggest grilled meat here and other heavy food. Probably best for a non “School night”. I can’t imagine not over consuming with this one. After all, Abona is itself a legend in the region…

Posta Piana Primitivo

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Primitivo
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

Most of my wine geek friends always confront me with a Zinfandel joke whenever we do Primitivo. (If you still don’t know, it’s the same thing) Yes I know, Californians drink this stuff by the container load, but that must mean there is something appealing about this grape. Deep ruby color and a full bodied round finish just cries out for some salami or hard cheese. A lot of flavor at a bargain price.

Posta Piana Negroamaro

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Negroamaro
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another grape variety that is typical for the South of Italy. Unlike Primitivo, this wine is a bit lighter with a touch more tannin and oak. I find this preferable for grilled beef or pork, where you get just a bit of fat you need to cut through. I suggest giving this one a good hour to breath, or decant if you can’t wait.

Kaltern Pinot Grigio Caldaro

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Pinot grigio
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

The whole reason I don’t do many Pinot Grigio in our boxes, is that I rarely find any that are really good. It’s one of those wines that never go really wrong, but at the same time are memorable. This wine is exacly why we are making an exception. A fantastic sweet and sour tangy flavor that I guarantee you will not be able to put down. The best Pinot I can remember for years – REALLY.

Kaltern Chardonnay Caldaro

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

A north Italian Chardonnay that comes much closer to the French mineral style. Some will find it more acidic in flavor, but this is typical and one just need to pay a bit more attention to the food pairing. Think white salty fish and you will have the perfect company.

Gavi il Doge DOCG Broglia

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cortese
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

Ask yourself a seriouis question. “Have you ever met somebody who doesn’t like Gavi ?” Like really, how can you not love this stuff. What makes this one vern better is that it gives great value for money. Remember Piemonte is one of those fancy neighborhoods in the wine world, and finding good, affordable wines from there can be tricky. This one hits the sweet spot. Light straw color and fresh fruity taste. An IWCoK sure thing!

Vermentino Mavriana DOCG Gallura

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Vermentino di Gallura
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

What it find that really distinguishes a good Vermentino, is the floral taste that comes out. Very different from the citrus that you find so predominantly in white wine. Already from the nose you can smell flowers and the taste is a balance of that and minerals. This is exactly what you should expect from this variety and area. A true ambassador.

Chardonnay DOC Borgo Molino

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Wine Food Market
  • Box: Back to the beginning
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

What I liked hear was the lower acidity and taste of pear and citrus fruits. Crisp and clean, this was a great middle ground between the French and American chardonnay types that will (hopefully) please everybody.
