Mike's Tip

Appassimento, like Ripasso or Amarone is a special treat. Leaving the grapes on the vine till the very last minute, and letting them dry out further before pressing means the sugar and alcohol are at their max. These are full bodied wines that need to begin with a heavy meal, and finish in from of a fire. 100% Relax

Mike's Tip

Five years in the waiting, two of which were in an oak barrel. A Grand Reserva from Rioja can not be rushed. Granit red with a touch or black current and smoke. Mike's Tip

Another entry into the, "Wines from old dried out grapes" category :-) This Appassimento is made from grapes left to dry out for two weeks before getting to the press. Expect a full bodied mouth of cherry, caramel and vanilla. The dried grapes give this wine a high alcohol content, so be careful. So smooth it will disappear from your glass without you having to try.

Governo Grand Maestro Red

Mike's Tip

Subtle and soft, this mix of Merlot and Sangiovese is made from a mix of fresh and dried grapes to boost its potential. Dried grapes have more concentrated levels of sugar, and that in the fermentation process gives greater alcohol potential, and a fruity and soft taste. One Italian wine guru gave this wine an astonishing 99 points. Now you decide.

Some of you may remember a red wine from La Bestia 2 years ago. It was one of our 2017 hits. They now introduce their first white from the same Tuscan hills. A mix of Trebbiano, Malvasia, Chardonnay, and Moscato produces a lovely mix of peaches, apples and raisins. A bit oily with a long finish. Enjoy it with risotto or salmon.

Mike's Tip

Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough valley in New Zealand is considered the top of the top for this grape. Fruity, crisp and a lovely grassy tail, this is a great wine to serve as an aperitif, or with fish and salad. Interesting that almost all the wines from this part of the world come with a screw top. Drink it young and fresh.

Casa Safra Fermentado en Barrica

Mike's Tip

99% of the time, Verdejo is drank when it is young and fresh. When you find that 1%, your in for something special. This is a complex and rich wine which rested in the barrel for 8 months. It has a long oily finish with a lovely gold / green color. This is a something special wine.

Nube

  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Viva España
  • Price: 259 Kč

Mike's Tip

Clean, fresh, salty and all the hints of a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. Sounds more complicated than it need be, but this is lovely wine with great acidity that will clean your pallet. A great seafood wine from Sauvignon and Viura.

Tuna Club

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Viva España
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Named after the famous club of the same name on Catalina Island (that's California folks :-), this was the place to find Charlie Chaplin and Bing Crosby on a weekend break. Nothing to do with this light blend of Verdejo and Sauvignon blanc, but just thought you would like to know....Melons and minerals without the movie stars.

Caballo d’Oro Rueda do Verdejo

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Verdejo
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Viva España
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

Rueda is one of the "hip" places for Spanish wine at the moment. Located in the north west and split by the river Duero that continues into Portugal, the area is a little cooler than other regions near by. Altitude also helps. At 650m, this is Verdejo country, and a perfect place it is !

Calle Principal Sauvignon Blanc

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Viva España
  • Price: 165 Kč

Mike's Tip

40 years the same thing. I guess when you found the right formula for a simple, fresh Sauvignon, there is no need to change. Pears, apples and a touch of acidity, this is one of those value wines that you will come back to time and again.

Landgraf Riesling Gutswein (Organic)

  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: What brought Čáp
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

This family winery in Germany has a long history of creating quality biologic wines. A classic Sauvignon with good acidity from citrus fruits and a touch of minerals.

Terra Grande

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

“Super Tuscans” are what they call the big red wines from that region which are not made exclusively from Sangiovese like in this case. Her we have a splash of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to make this big red, in a big bottle, with a big score of 96 a big BIG deal. There is nothing subtle about this wine – it will dominate your table.

Buena Ribera

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

A 10 year old Spaniard reserve from the Duero valley – WOW. Exceptionally full bodied, this will fill you with ripe cherry, oak (21 months in the barrel) and smoke. Tinto Fino or more commonly referred to as Tempranillo is the mainstay of the Ribera del Deuro region. This wine needs to breath after 10 years, so please decant or open it before you leave for work in the morning.

La Bestia

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

You are in for something special here. This wine from Tuscany is more or less an equivalent to an Amarone. After picking, the grapes were left to dry in the hot Tuscan sun for weeks before being turned into wine. This means a very full, fruity “sweet” taste that everybody (repeat EVERYBODY) will love. Very drinkable – enjoy.

Fabrice Vincent Grebet Pouilly-Fumé

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

One of the most famous and prestigious wines from the Loire. Pouilly-Fumé must be made exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc and gets it’s name from the large grey (Smokey) flower blossoms that appear on the vines at harvest time. For me, there is nothing better to drink with oysters – this is it!

Endless River

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Something under the tree
  • Price: 209 Kč

Mike's Tip

When wine from New Zealand, then a Sauvignon blanc from the Marlborough region is usually the first pick. Perfect for cold fish of any type, with a crisp green taste and good acidity. At just 12.5%, this is an excellent aperitif to get the party going. Fresh and light with just a little bite…

Domaine Saint Paul Colline

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Picpoul is also known as the “Chablis of the South” because of its intense yellow color, and bright, fresh taste. For me personally, Picpoul is also a much easier grape to drink, making it a perfect companion for dinners with friends and family when you have no idea what they like. A go everywhere companion to be used when your not sure “what”.

Tentuta Soave

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Coming from the area around Verona, this crystal clear golden, green cuvee brings a full taste of pears, apples and a touch of anise. Soave must always include the Garganega grape, it may also include Chardonnay or Trebbiano as this one does. This is a medium bodies white wine with a long finish suitable for all occasions including sipping on the sofa while watching the tube.

Mount Penrice Reserva Shiraz

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Down Under Mate!. This Australian Syrah (Shiraz in Australian) has deep jammy tones and a hint of dark chocolate. Look for intense fruity flavor with a tail of spice and blueberry!

Chateau Nouaillac Bordeaux

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Dressed Up. What better to celebrate the last dinner of a holiday than with a true Grand Vin from Bordeaux. This classic Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot blend from 25 year old vines delivers a very refined touch to any meal of baked meat or pork.

La Grille Pouilly-Fumé

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Elegance. Arguably the most famous wine of the Loire valley, Pouilly-Fume is known all over the world a an excellent accompaniment to shell fish. With oysters, perfect! This Sauvignon has in intense mineral flavor with high acidity that will clean your pallet.

Armand Schereyer Pinot Blanc

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Cool in the foothills. If you taste Chardonnay in this Pinot Blanc from Alsace, you will not be alone. Many of the same characteristics are found in this variety that is a little "less traveled". Light and fresh, perfect for an outdoor meal and that Alsatian bottle always adds a touch of class.

Pigoudet Cuveé La Chapelle Blanc

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Provence. I think everybody has fantasized over sitting in a French café on the beach in Provence, sipping a glass of clear, crisp wine. Well, we have moved the mountain to Mohamed, and put THAT wine on your table :-). Light, mineral and floral tones.

Damilano Barbera d’Alba

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Big aggressive tannic blackberry flavor! The Piedmont Barbera's are not for those who don't like the quiet and subtle. This wine has strong spice elements, so be ready for a little cinnamon and green pepper. And of course, serve with beef! Wine Enthusiast 88 points.

Damilano Dolcetto d’Alba

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

A deep rusty red, this is a wine with a bit more acidity mixed in with red fruits and almonds. Like a lot of young wines, Dolcetto is not a variety I suggest to drink without food. And ideal partner will be a pork chop or chicken. Make it a white meat weekend!

Damilano Langhe Arneis

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

If you prefer getting your advice from Wine Spectator, then 88. If you trust James Suckling, then 90 . Whatever your reference, another refreshing mineral fruit bomb. The mineral tomes are a bit more pronounced in this wine, so suggest fried foods and fish.

Truffle Hunter

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

As the name implies, Piedmont is also famous for truffles! And the story just gets better! This wine is made 100% from the grape Favorita ! Look for mineral tones with a strong helping of pears. A simple wine but sure to be an outdoor dining "favorite" …( sorry : )

Gran Sello Tempranillo – Syrah

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Look for a spicy flavor here, as the Syrah comes out at the end of the plums and nutty flavor. A bronze meddle winner from the Decanter wine awards, scoring 88 points, this is an intense wine ready for a steak or big juicy burger.

Sabor Real

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

To get on Robert Parker's list is accomplishment enough, but this 91 point love bomb will fix any problem you may have. This is a classic mix of leather and vanilla from Toro. This wine is at it's peak right now, so don't let the awards or 14,5% fool you in to putting in the back of your collection. It is ready to rock, and that it will!

Altos Rioja Tempranillo

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

Tempranillo without a year in oak comes out a lot fruitier and fresher. This is an ideal lunch wine for your BBQ. Enough body to go with any burger or pork collar, but not so sophisticated that you don't want to pull it out of the cabinet. Look for a little spice here, liquorice and pepper. This is classic Rioja

Altos de Rioja Crianza

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

A lot of flavor comes out here. A Crianza refers to a wine from Rioja, made from Tempranillo that is aged in oak for at least 1 year, the aged in the bottle for another year before being sold. These are medium priced wines, that have good tannin and a deep purple color. This wine needs a hearty dish, so think lamb, gulas or some really smelly strong cheese. Be strong, because it is!

Pedra da Auga

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Albarino
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 229 Kč

Mike's Tip

The only varietal white in the box, this Albarino is clear and light. The medium alcohol content makes it a very easy wine even without a food pairing. A light acidity comes from the peach and green apple flavor. This is a sure thing for guests, and will work with any fish or white meat dish.

Faustino V Rioja Blanco

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

Faustino is arguably the most famous (read most sold) Spanish winemaker. Their focus is export, and they do it well selling their wines to over 70 counties. This Chardonnay based cuveé comes in one of the most unattractive bottles we have seen for a while, but look past that and you have a great simple white for pork or white sausages. Don't complicate things here, chill and grill :-)

Gran Sello Macabeo Verdejo

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Spanish Summer
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

The high altitude of this vineyard means big variation in temperature. Hot days and cold nights give these grapes a higher acidity, making the wine richer with a long finish. This one has a bit of a bite. Look for green apple and what I can only describe as a taste of "grey" minerals. Given the full palate, pair this with any snacks or dips. The taste will hold its own!

  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz

Mike's Tip

This cuvee of Viura and Malvasia has a strong floral scent, with a light touch of acidity. This is a perfect warm weather wine. Light and dry, a touch of fruit and a clear, straw color.
Definitely not a sangria ingredient, but a great companion for a salad or other light food.

Saragio 2010

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy

  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: The Black Box
  • Price: 255 Kč

Mike's Tip

Probably my favorite red wine variety with a big fat steak. Add a little fat on the side, and some gristle, you can’t find a better food pairing. The fruity taste will go great with lots of things, but it is the aggressive nature of the tannin and acidity that cuts the protein in your mouth. Be it a burger, meatball, roast, or steak, there is just one thing to remember with this one – Show me the Beef!

La Duna

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Wild - 91 Parker points is really all you need to know about this one. A rich and complex Tempranillo that hints off all things black! Tobacco, leather, black current and berries. I found this wine back in August and have been waiting for a special occasion to put it on the table. Merry Christmas!

Elegant - The Sauvignons from the Loire Valley are famous the world over. This is a crisp, full white perfect for a plate of oysters or other cold salty fish. Think about your holiday appetizers for this one, or that something special for those who will only be drinking white.

Domain dela Jasse Blanc Chardonnay

Mike's Tip

Fresh - For those who like their Chardonnay more Old world, this one is for you. Good acidity and fresh banana and white fruit flavor not clouded over with too much oak. Exactly what we expect from Burgundy and a fitting table companion.

Yate Cava Brut DO Penedes

  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz

Mike's Tip

This delicious light Cava is made in the traditional “Champagne Method”. This gives it delicate flavor and a bone dry flavor.

Ladairo

Wine description:

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 369 Kč

Mike's Tip

Intense in color and flavor, just like the land this wine comes from. Grown from a land covered in yellow slate, the extreme heat gives these grapes tremendous potential for flavor and maturing in the bottle. A touch of oak made this my favorite white of the box.

Terra de Asorei

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Albarino
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 299 Kč

Mike's Tip

Full and fruity. Imagine a salad of oranges, grapefruits, pears, plums and lemon. Then add a touch of salt. Sound odd ? Well Robert Parker gave it a 90 ! Put this one with salmon or even some Asian food. The touch of sugar will do will with something exotic.

Punto y Coma

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

We are back with another 90 "Parker" point wine, this time a spicy Grenache. The 11 months of aging in oak barrels gives it a clear taste of vanilla and a fantastic balance and finish for a wine in this price range. If you are not a Grenache fan yet, this one will convince you.

Don Mendo Gran Reserva

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

This grande reserva from 2009 aged 20 months in oak barrels before aging another 4 years in the bottle. A mix of Syrah, Cabernet and Tempranillo, it gives a good balance of maturity, flavor for it's price. Look for the vanilla and coffee tones.

El Tidon

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Although a simple wine, this one collected 3 gold medals! A solid citrus flavor with just a hint of that typical Sauvignon "wild" mineral flavor. A simple wine that won't dissapoints a mid week fix ;-)

Luna Creciente

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Like the name implies, this wine has a crystal clear presentation. A delicate mix of pears, grapefruit, apple and flowers, I found this to be the most refined white of the box. Pair with white fish or other light food - nothing spicy here.

Flor d’englora

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Here we are AGAIN. Another 90 Parker point wine and indeed a Grenache that you will want to compare to the others in this box. This is a fresh wine meant to be drank young when it's spicy flavor is at its' full. Pair this one with some strong dark meat or stew.

Pico Cuadro

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

If you are looking for complexity, you will find it here. Coming from and 80 year old vines, this ruby red brings you a mix of fruit, tobacco and a hint of leather. It is important to leave this wine to breath before drinking, and pair it with some peppery salami, or beef. A true gem.

Montepedroso

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

What would this box be without a Verdejo ?! A great intensity of citrus and rocks (officialy "minerals" :-) and an exceptionally clean crisp taste. Serve with salty fish or cheese

Don Mendo Verdejo

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Full of citrus and green apple. The low alcohol content makes this a very drinkable wine despite the higher acidity. Perfect for salads or other everyday food. Great value for money.

Señorio de La Serna Baron de Santuy Reserva DO Ribera del Duero 1999

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

Total shocker this one. I admit we tried it just because of its funny label and bottle shape. But WOW, this is one of the chance gold mines you stumble across. Look past the "Pirates of the Caribbean " bottle motive, and you will find a 100% Tempranillo that was aged for over 2 years in oak, and another 13 years in the bottle. Aged enough and ready to consume RIGHT NOW. So smooth this will go with a steak, or a movie night on the sofa.

Alceño Premium 50 Barricas DO Jumilla 2012

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 297 Kč

Mike's Tip

These are the spices I was talking about. Syrah takes a lot of its flavor from the area it is grown. In this case, the warmer climate gives it a softer pepper taste, but leaves a hint of liquorice and leather (trust me here). Elegant and an excellent full bodied red for any stewed meat of game dish (and a great break away from the same old Merlot / Cabernet line).

Château Haut Nadeau Bordeaux Supérieur AOC 2009

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

This classic Bordeaux cuvee shows both its; maturity and its terroir. That little bit of acidity from the Cabernet Franc comes out, and demands that this wine properly breaths before drinking (1 hour minimum) and will accompany some red meat preferably with a bit of fat. Not for the dinner with "Kapr" or ham, but the steak or burger the day after ;-)

Black Hawk Zinfandel 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: United States
  • Grape: Zinfandel
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

For you experts out there, you will know this variety as Primitivo. Not because it tastes like a football hooligan, but rather that is the first
(primi) grape picked at the harvest. Whatever you call it, Zinfandel is the 2nd most popular red grape in the USA, putting its' global consumption in the top 10. Not that it matters, but more importantly this wine was awarded a "Best Buy" award from our own Wine and Degustation magazine. Round and full bodied, with a long tail of vanilla.

Black Hawk Chardonnay 2013

  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz

  • Price: 169 Kč

Mike's Tip

Coming to you from the "Farm of the world" the San Joaquin Valley of California. Measuring 100 by 750 Kms, this is America's fruit and vegetable garden and the largest farm in the world. It also produces 90% of all the Californian wine. This one comes from the norther end close to San Fransisco, and gives a strong mineral, and very light oak taste. I would have said France.

La Pauline Platine 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: United States
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 199 Kč

Mike's Tip

Pauline was Napoleon's favorite and most trusted sister and a woman with a certain love of life. Not sure how she would up on a bottle of Chardonnay from Burgundy, but it doesn't really matter. Chardonnay is best known for Chablis, which is a specific sub region. But it is the same sun just across the path and this is where we find this one. What makes it a little unusual is that it was rested 3 months in oak giving it a rounder, more caramel taste. I would have said California.

Stanley Bay 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 229 Kč

Mike's Tip

Also a new world "Sauvage" but more a little brother than a big hitter. The lower alcohol content and minerality makes this a much simpler wine and ready for all occasions. Don't be afraid to pull this on out for the in-laws as its fruity taste makes it a very easy drink.

Two rivers of Marlborough 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Holiday Spice
  • Price: 359 Kč

Mike's Tip

How many gold medal labels can you fit on one bottle ? This wine entered the race (and won 5x!) . A classic new world Sauvignon with well balanced flavor of grass, minerals and white fruit. Delicate enough for any light starter, but with flavor to match a cold fish starter. Get out the shell fish.

Château Salambo Grand Cru

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

I mentioned that Tunisia had a tradition of wine making dating back from the colonial times. With a climate similar to its Mediterranean neighbors in the north, wine making was a growing industry until Tunisian independence in the 1950. Only now is large scale production coming back to the country and evidently has a huge rose potential.

Angora Sultana

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

Who would of thought that a Turkish wine would prove so popular ? We did! Sultana is most common in the middle east and Australia (often used for raisin production) and is known for its' light acidity and fruitiness. Low acidity makes for a popular easy drinking white wine perfect for warm days, picnics or lunch. And we guarantee you are going to be the only one on the block with a Turkish wine you didn't smuggle back from a holiday.

Marques de Cus Verdejo DO Rueda 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Verdejo
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 185 Kč

Mike's Tip

Rueda's the region, Verdejo the grape. Believe it or not, this variety originated in north Africa and was brought north some 1,000,000 years ago (approximately:-). You can not miss the flavor of pears in this light mineral filled wine. We found this one to be an exceptional value for money.

D. Pedro D. Soutomaior Albarino Do Rias Baixas 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Albarino
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 289 Kč

Mike's Tip

Just when you thought you knew what an Albarino tastes like, this one walks in. Completely different. Much more delicate, lower acidity and just a hint of oak. Too complex for drinking on its own, but more versatile when pairing with food. Stay away from salty fish and go more for a white meat. My favorite white in the box.

Casa Safra Ucles DO Verdejo 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Verdejo
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 149 Kč

Mike's Tip

This Verdejo is a beautiful straw coloured wine with an intense nose of fruit. I tasted dry, sour pears and peaches. Evidently the region this wine is coming from is a "hot" new comer, and many expect to see "Ucles" on the verdejo map for quite some time. I find these wines to be ideal with cold fish. Like a starter with muscles of calamari. Serve it very cold!

Vina Bandoleira Albariño Rias Baixas DO 2013

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Albarino
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 189 Kč

Mike's Tip

My first impression was delicate, but the finish was anything but. A wild and spicy flavor that reminded me of a Sauvignon that is evidently typical of the Albarino grape. This one has a bit of an oily finish, so lingers in your mouth for a long time.

Erudito Rioja Reserva DOC 2009

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 209 Kč

Mike's Tip

Gold medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2013, this is possibly the best Rioja of the year, in the world (at least if you trust the experts). What did I think ? Exceptional balanced and good tannins. Will go best with red meat or other piece of grilled protein of your choice :-). For you gentler folks, think cheese!

Caballo d’Oro Valdepeñas DO Reserva 2008

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 179 Kč

Mike's Tip

The hands down winner of our taste test. 100% Tempranillo, this is a smooth well aged mature red ready for your table. Gold medal - Berlin wine trophy. It's popularity comes from the light tannins, making it less complex and an easier drink on its own. Perfect for any day of the week.

Añares Rioja Reserva 2009

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Box: Gold Medal Spain
  • Price: 219 Kč

Mike's Tip

How many gold medal wines can we put in 1 box? Evidently, quite a few!. Think of this one as a Tempranillo with a twist. Indeed this is a cuvee including Garnacha and Mazuelo (two of those 600 or so varieties we talked about). I found the belend ot be a bit drier and less heavy than the other Tempranillo. Excellent sipping wine (and yes, that is a Silver medal from Decanter - serious stuff!
