Something under the tree

It works so nicely. Christmas time, family and friends, good food, and some elegant wine to go with. That is our plan at IWCoK headquarters anyway, and we thought it our job to bring that last “detail” to your tables too.

We know that this may be the only newsletter when a recommendation of a white wine with shell fish may actually be realized. So, a pairing of oysters and Sauvignon, preferably Pouilly Fume is a fantastic choice ( yes this is getting personal;-). Need something that goes with everything? Picpoul is light, fresh and as provocative as vanilla ice cream – i.e. everybody likes it!

And for the reds, we may have found this years “Killer App” right at the end. La Bestia gets it’s full bodied fruity flavor from a second fermentation just like a Ripasso. Exceptionally full bodied and low tannins mean this is going to be a huge favorite. Something bigger ? Try this month’s super Tuscan in a bottle you will not want to drop on your foot.

So, as we close 2017 with a list of classic wines, the IWCoK team would just like to say “Thanks” and make sure you drink these wines with friends and family (with our logo clearly visible ;-)

Mike's Tip

Coming from the area around Verona, this crystal clear golden, green cuvee brings a full taste of pears, apples and a touch of anise. Soave must always include the Garganega grape, it may also include Chardonnay or Trebbiano as this one does. This is a medium bodies white wine with a long finish suitable for all occasions including sipping on the sofa while watching the tube.

Domaine Saint Paul Colline

  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine

  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 229 Kč

Mike's Tip

Picpoul is also known as the “Chablis of the South” because of its intense yellow color, and bright, fresh taste. For me personally, Picpoul is also a much easier grape to drink, making it a perfect companion for dinners with friends and family when you have no idea what they like. A go everywhere companion to be used when your not sure “what”.

Endless River

Wine description:

  • Country: New Zealand
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 209 Kč

Mike's Tip

When wine from New Zealand, then a Sauvignon blanc from the Marlborough region is usually the first pick. Perfect for cold fish of any type, with a crisp green taste and good acidity. At just 12.5%, this is an excellent aperitif to get the party going. Fresh and light with just a little bite…

Fabrice Vincent Grebet Pouilly-Fumé

Wine description:

  • Country: France
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 499 Kč

Mike's Tip

One of the most famous and prestigious wines from the Loire. Pouilly-Fumé must be made exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc and gets it’s name from the large grey (Smokey) flower blossoms that appear on the vines at harvest time. For me, there is nothing better to drink with oysters – this is it!

La Bestia

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 239 Kč

Mike's Tip

You are in for something special here. This wine from Tuscany is more or less an equivalent to an Amarone. After picking, the grapes were left to dry in the hot Tuscan sun for weeks before being turned into wine. This means a very full, fruity “sweet” taste that everybody (repeat EVERYBODY) will love. Very drinkable – enjoy.

Buena Ribera

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied red aged in oak
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 279 Kč

Mike's Tip

A 10 year old Spaniard reserve from the Duero valley – WOW. Exceptionally full bodied, this will fill you with ripe cherry, oak (21 months in the barrel) and smoke. Tinto Fino or more commonly referred to as Tempranillo is the mainstay of the Ribera del Deuro region. This wine needs to breath after 10 years, so please decant or open it before you leave for work in the morning.

Terra Grande

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 428 Kč

Mike's Tip

“Super Tuscans” are what they call the big red wines from that region which are not made exclusively from Sangiovese like in this case. Her we have a splash of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to make this big red, in a big bottle, with a big score of 96 a big BIG deal. There is nothing subtle about this wine – it will dominate your table.
