Rich pickings

Lets ride out the last days of winter with something rich and full bodied on the table. Where we find it may surprise you.

Big and bold Austria !?! Believe it. I can not remember when I have tried a fuller bodied Veltlin than the Roter Veltiner in this months box. Be it the slope, sun or just that bit of residual sugar, I don’t know, but it was a mouthful before, during and after (in that I couldn’t stop talking about it). I should also mention that it was a member who tipped us off to this one – Yariv, good find! Not to be outdone, we have two wines from Slovenia that also go down in the “OMG” category. Many of you will have tried the grape Furmint in Hungary, but I doubt any of you have tried the Slovenian version. A big raisin taste with a slightly sweet and sour finish. Complicated, heavy and all together delicious. And the Sauvignon from the same winery – full of minerals, grass and totally wild.

For the reds we went a bit further west and dropped in a couple of Tempranillo’s that show a huge amount of maturity. The Tempranillo cuveé with Grenache adds in that little bit of fruit and spice that you don’t get in the more mature version. Add in some more pure Grenache and a Syrah to spice things up just a bit, and we have all the ingredients needed for some of the end of winter season guláš and dumplings you may be putting away before moving on the lighter summer foods.

So even if you are feeling a little out of pocket these days, this mix of rich full bodied wines will surely tank you up, and make you feel like a million :-).

Wow, this one come off a steep slope of red rocks in the Wagram, the home region of this variety. Given the warmer climate, red varieties are also grown here. Look for a real mix of fruits and honey. Complicated, very difficult to identify and 100% delicious.

Verus Furmint 2013

Mike's Tip

Known in Slovenia as Šipon, is a variet more known in Hungary for making sweet tokaji wines but also now more and more common as a dry wine. The special bit is that Furmint is very high in acidity and often extract, making it full of flavor yet still fresh and low in alcohol. Will go great with Asian food or simple grilled pork.

Alfredo Roca Syrah 2013

  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS

Mike's Tip

Full of blueberry and plums and very, very deep ruby color.. Syrah goes well with game or other heavy meats and strong stews. This is the kind of wine you pair with meals when you don't need to be productive afterwards :-)

Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra 2014

  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 227 Kč

Mike's Tip

Pleanty of fruit here and sweet tannins that almost jump out of the glass ;-). A great wine for burgers or other grilled red meat. Some also drink this red slightly chilled on a hot day. Experiment for yourself.

Más Polit Negre 2010

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 431 Kč

Mike's Tip

Flesh and leather, wood and fruit. This wine hits well above its weight. A blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this has a very specific nose that some may not find pleasant at all when you open it. But give it some time, and all those flavors come together. One of the top reds we have tried in 2016!

Cathar Joven 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Spain
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 272 Kč

Mike's Tip

Tempranillo for me is a hit or miss wine. Sometimes amazing, sometimes useful only for making svarak. Cather definitely falls into the former with a very mature well balanced taste unbelievably coming from a wine that next saw a barrel. Yes 100% steel tank. A wine that will go with most any food be it Wednesday meat loaf or Friday tapas. Easy and enjoyable.

Verus Sauvignon Blank 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Slovenia
  • Grape: Sauvignon blanc
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: CELLARIUS
  • Price: 297 Kč

Mike's Tip

Verus in latin means Truth, and this is as simple and fresh example of fine Sauvignon as you will find. Crisp and full of gooseberry and nettles, it leave that little earthy taste on the pallet after you swallow. This is the wild flavor Sauvignon gives!
