Box: June 2013

Primitiv-Oh

How long have we been waiting to do a Primitivo box ! – Too long is the answer.

I know a few of you are already familiar with Primitivo. Full bodied, well rounded red wine from Puglia Italy. Something you probably don’t know is that Primitivo is very VERY popular in the USA. Just that they call it – Zinfandel. That’s right. Zinfandel, “California’s” grape that accounts fro about 10% of all wine production in the states!

In this box you will be able to compare two Primitivos – you decide what works for you. The higher alcohol content comes from the sugar in the grapes, but don’t worry, these wines are not sweet. Indeed you will get a lot of fruit flavor, but nothing in there that will have you running off to the dentist.

For comparison again, we have included a Negroamaro. This is another deep red variety from Puglia with many of the same characteristics as Primitivo (i.e. this is not a wine for wimps).

Primitive ? No way. The wine gets it’s name from the fact that this variety is one of the first (primi) to ripen and be harvested. All the cave man stuff is just my looking for a theme bit…

In white we have a couple of  Fiano’s from Puglio and Marche that were just great bang for the buck (that is good value), and a couple of surprises that we picked up along the way (including a new white from Goriska Brda that I am excited about and a Viogner from Uruguay that just popped in :-)

Enough of my Prim-o-crap-0-la
