On the way to Balaton
Some may prefer the shores of Balaton, others the hills of Brda or the northern plains of Serbia, but one thing for sure is those Central European countries to our south make some great wine, and this month we bring 4 Hungarian gems.
White wine from Tokay is famous the world over and is stuck in our mind for making sweet, sticky wines. That is “So 2008”… Modern Tokay wines are dry, distinct, and elegant. Both Hungarian whites we took this month bring modern varietal characteristics. The flowery fragrance of Muscat or the wheat gold coloured Furmint, with it’s dry, acidic tones.
For me, Hungarian reds are best drank in blends that always include Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc. These grapes give the wine a “red” fruit flavour that is juicy and full of cherry. Not as full or round as black fruit varieties (we dropped a Primitivo in too so don’t panic), but these are great food wines that will not take over the entire dinner. Pair these red blends with a simple steak or a pork chop with just a little grisle and you will know what I am talking about – a perfect match.
So enjoy the water, the waves, the hills, mountains, or plains that you find on this summer’s holiday. And if you are close to home, there is always great drop to find.

A bit of chardonnay, furmint and Muscat complete this medium bodied white. Look for a mix of sweet tropical fruit from one variety mixing with high acidity with others all coming together with a long finish. Great with salmon or chicken.

A classic Hungarian white variety, Furmint has been the drink of choice of royalty over the ages. Don't confuse this with what you think you know about wines from Tokay. This is a modern wine, dry with strong fruit tones. A serious drink for an elegant meal.

Another white from the Tokay region that brings a classic bouquet to an otherwise dry and delicate wine. Muscat is known for its big nose, and this won't disappoint. Ideal pairing with shell fish, mussels or oysters.

What I like about the reds from this region? Raspberries! Based on a classic Bordeaux blend and mixed with a bit of Kefrankos, you get a very fruity wine of red fruits, so medium bodied and a bit of acidity. Perfect for grilled meats with a bit of fat that needs to be cut through.

This is an easy, fruity red that you will pull out with the pizza on Wednesday night, or the pasta you cook on Sunday. A mix of red fruit and a bit of pepper, medium in body that won't loose the food with it.

"Open and let it breath! After and hour or so, you will be saying Very Berry and still not be sure what it was ;-) A mix of red and back berries here in this mix of
Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Medium intensity, but a relatively long finish."
Salento Primitivo “Don Cosimo”

You guys know what to expect from a Primitivo by now, and this one with 5 years of a 3.8 Vivino rating will not disappoint. Dark, heavy and a bit sweet, it is silky smooth and will put you into relax mode after the first glass ;-)
