New Old Friends

The story around our new supplier this month is an old one. Old in that we met for the first time over fives years ago, but never got “it” together. Lets just say we have both been busy… A real shame, because Foltyn Wines has a great portfolio from all over the world that we will try out this month.

If anybody says white wines from Austria, these days they can’t be talking about anything other than Veltin. Green, spicy and fresh, we all love it. We have selected two Veltins from just over the border to put you with the in crowd. Add in a surprise from Spain that will blow you away, and a light cuvee from Puglia, and you have a tour de-force of fantastic whites that with work well with your Thanksgiving dinner (If uh, your doing that kind of thing :-)

The reds start off with a classic Primitivo from the south of Italy that is such a no brainer, that it will surely be the first wine opened. Rich and fruity, everything that you expect. Australian Merlot !? We haven’t done that for a while. Barbera from Piedmont ? Yes, we covered all the bases (and tastes ) to get our Foltyn sampler off to a running start.

So lets welcome our old friend back, check out the site and get ready to see more of them in the coming months!

Enjoy.

Mike's Tip

Austrian Veltliner is all the rage at the moment, and with a wine like this no surprise. A mouthful of flavor comes from the 30 year old vines and 6 hours of maceration with the skins. Look for an explosion of grapefruit and a touch of tobacco. Interesting.... A Prague wine trophy silver medalist - go for it.

Mike's Tip

It will be tough to find a more typical Austrian Veltliner than this one. Apples, pepper and a good dose of minerals gives it a slightly spicy, fruity flavor. A perfect table companion for a salad, fish or some fried chicken (preferably not from the coronel ;-) Prague wine trophy gold medalist. Drink it up !

In almost every box I find a wine that is surprising and exceptional. This was it! A blend of Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, it would be difficult to find a white wine the better describes the word "Fresh". An exceptionally easy wine to drink all at a price that says more more more. 90 points, gold medalist - you don't need to know. This wine will convince you with the first sip.

Mike's Tip

A classic primitive. Dark ruby red, lots of raspberries and a full fruity finish. It is the full flavor of forest fruits that make Primitivo so popular today, and you will not be disappointed with this one from Puglia. A true star (just like the detail on the label - check it out, lovely)

Mike's Tip

It has indeed been a long while since we had an Australian in the box. Welcome back this cuvee with a merlot base. A very soft finish for a black / red drink full of coffee, plums and black berries. With quality of this caliber, we will be going down under more often from now on!

Barbera Viberti

Mike's Tip

Few will argue that the most famous wine region of Italy is Piedmont, and when you talk about reds from the region Barbera comes to the top of the list. A full bodied fruity wine with hints of blueberry with 6 months of rest in oak barrels before being bottled and aged again! Welcome to the big leagues.
