Box: March 2016

Near and Far

Matching up Czech and Brazilian wines in one box may sound like a crazy idea at first, but that is only if you don’t know Jan Neubauer and Maryna Omská – two wine pros bringing these two ends of the earth together.

Near – many of you will recognize the labels from Arte Vini, and maybe even the tasting we did at Na Konce a couple of years back. Coming from Znojmo, Arte Vini wines are a true staple at many a Czech restaurant.
This is Jan’s baby after many years in the trade.
Far – Ever wonder where every Brazilian restaurant in this country gets their wines from ? This is Maryna’s niche, as well as host of other new world counties. The pair make a great duo for an adventurous wine tasting treat.

Given that your Brazilian wine knowledge may need a little tune up, let me help. You know Brazil is a big place, but it is also one of the biggest wine producers in the world. Over 90% of the wine come from the Southern most state of Rio Grande do Sul, and was founded almost exclusively by Italian immigrants at the end of 19th century. The immigrants, mainly poor farmers coming for the opportunity to buy their own land settled in the mountains around the town of Bento Goncalves.
Rio Grande do Sul has a temperate climate marked with four distinct seasons. Winters full of rain and snow and warm summers in the low 30’s.

There was only problem back when everybody got off the boat – the Brazilians didn’t drink wine… The wine industry really only took off in the 1980’s after foreign winemakers invested in the region and started to produce a quality that was suitable for export. This was originally dominated by 2 large cooperatives – The most celebrated of which was Miolo. We have 4 wines this month from Miolo and in addition, what some call the best Cabernet Frank in South America from Casa Valduga.

So be it familiar Moravian whites or big, bold reds from the heart of South America, we can guarantee that this box will find you a favorite what ever your taste may be.

Arte Vivi VZ 2015

Wine description:

  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Grape: Grüner Veltliner
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Arte Vini
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

Every bit as good as the Veltins' from Austria, this is a great balance of fruit and spice. Be it the melon at the start of that green, grassy, spicy finish, this will be a great "knife" to a fish dish. Try it with salmon or other oily fish as the wine will not be over powered. Clean and refreshing, this one is a real pick-me-up.

Arte Vivi PÁ 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Grape: Palava
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Arte Vini
  • Price: 275 Kč

Mike's Tip

Did you know that Palava is a cross of Tramin and Mueller Thurgau ? This is a very full bodied wine that combines a higher amount of acidity and sugar that will last in your cellar for years to come. If you are looking for a wine that will go well with spicy food, or something that is guaranteed to please even a novice wine drinker at the table, Palava's sweetness is the right choice. A deep golden color that will hit you with strong apricot and honey tones.

Arte Vini CH 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Grape: Chardonnay
  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Arte Vini
  • Price: 249 Kč

Mike's Tip

As you are all by now chardonnay experts, you will easily find a full and buttery taste here that stays on your pallet for a long time. With a touch of minerals on the finish, this chardonnay finds a nice middle ground. Try it with a light curry or some chicken tikka masala. Trust me- it works just fine ;-)

Miolo Pinot Grigio Family Reserve 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Brazil
  • Grape: Pinot grigio
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Cosmopolitan Brazilian Wines s.r.o.
  • Price: 375 Kč

Mike's Tip

Get ready for complex. Aged in a steel tank, there is no oak for mask the pallet of flavors you can taste here. Oranges, pears, almonds and roses, this wine is so full and balanced you will be surprised it wasn't barrel aged for years. Unlike the Pinot's you are familiar with from Italy, this is more a meal than a starter. Repeat - FULL BODIED...

Miolo Merlot Family Reserva 2014

Wine description:

Mike's Tip

One thing that you may notice in these Merlots, is that the tannin is a bit sweet. This gives you a fruity sensation in the mouth and a slightly acidic finish. This is a wine that needs to breath at least 30 minutes prior to drinking (or decant) and should be drank with "real" food. No carrots and cheese plate here, you're going to need a steak or "gulas burrito" (kind of a local specialty).

Salton Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Wine description:

  • Country: Brazil
  • Grape: Cabernet Saugvinon
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Cosmopolitan Brazilian Wines s.r.o.
  • Price: 259 Kč

Mike's Tip

This is a simple mid level wine suitable for a meal mid week after the kids homework and before Star Dance on the sofa. The slightly reduced alcohol content makes it a bit easier to drink, and lets the tannins be a bit short in the mouth. Pair it up with what ever meat dish is on the stove that night - not to be over complicated.

Casa Valduga Cabernet Franc Raizes 2011

Wine description:

  • Country: Brazil
  • Grape: Cabernet Franc
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Cosmopolitan Brazilian Wines s.r.o.
  • Price: 345 Kč

Mike's Tip

It is rare that I find a pure Cabernet Franc outside of Hungary that I would put to our members. The 3 silver medals this wine received indeed got my interest. This variety has a slightly higher acidity than a Saugvignon, making it a little less full and (for me) a much better match to clean grilled meat. Look for hints of strawberry from this wine harvested from the hills bordering Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Miolo Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve 2014

Wine description:

  • Country: Brazil
  • Grape: Cabernet Saugvinon
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Cosmopolitan Brazilian Wines s.r.o.
  • Price: 375 Kč

Mike's Tip

Don't let the screw top on these wines fool you into thinking that you must drink them ASAP. The screw top just slows down the aging process. This Cabernet was made from a slow fermentation process and oak aged to give it a very even and round flavor. Fruity tannins and a very dry finish. If you find a scent of coffee, you're not crazy!
