Box: January 2015
Kind of crazy January
January is kind of a crazy month for a wine club. All our members are thirsty as they drank all their stock (and then some) over the holiday and are dry. But, because they drank (and ate) everything, nobody “wants” to drink anything. We at IWCoK of course only believe the first half, and are ready to put some good goodness on your table.
To make 2015 a fresh start, we are happy to bring you 2 new suppliers and an IWCoK first!
To start, we introduce Skolni Statek Melnik to our supplier list. They also bring to our table a 2014 Muller Thurgau from (yes) Melnik, our first ever Bohemian wine. In the first place, the Statek operates as a horticulture and wine school, but they also make an increasingly popular selection of Bio wines that are pretty good and exceptionally good value. Check the internet, the 2006 Riesling is legendary!
And not to be outdone, we are proud to present La Fattoria, one of the oldest Italian wine imported in the country. These guys have been at it for almost 15 years, and we found a very refined selection from across the country. Given their large and yet discovered (by IWCoK) cellar, you will be hearing more from these guys in the months ahead
Enough talk about all the new stuff, lets get on to the wines !
Falerio

- Grape: Cuveé
- Alcohol: 12,5%
- Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: La Fattoria
- Price: 179 Kč
Mike's Tip
This pale yellow wine is a blemd of Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino (no not he cheese!) gives a flowery and light acidic taste. I found it a bit more interesting than it's red brother. Much like the Ottella, it will do great as a starter or with a light (white food) meal. Look for the flowers in this one - they are everywhere!
Lugana Ottella
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Trebbiano
- Alcohol: 12%
- Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: La Fattoria
- Price: 389 Kč
Mike's Tip
What a great wine for an aperitif. This 100% Trebbiano is only 12.5%, but so full in flavor it is a great wine to set your pallet up for an exciting dinner. Will work great with salads, fish or pasta.
Tedeschi Valpolicella Classico Reserve
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Valpolicela
- Alcohol: 12,5%
- Style: Medium-bodied red wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: La Fattoria
- Price: 299 Kč
Mike's Tip
Valpolicella can be a tricky one. The name conveys classic Italian, big round red. But in reality, these wines can be quite light and tannic. This one is light and has that tannic end, but in good measure making it drinkable for the masses. You will want to pair this one with red meat. The fat will balance the tannins and the wine won't fill you up.
Rosso Piceno Superiore
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Cuveé
- Alcohol: 13%
- Style: Medium-bodied red wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: La Fattoria
- Price: 249 Kč
Mike's Tip
This one sat in oak for months before going to the bottle. Look for plum and cherry flavor. The oposite of the Valpolicella, this wine is full and in your face ! Big, round flavors that will leave an impression. Red meat and cheese only and best all together:-)
Muller Thurgau 2014
Wine description:
- Country: Czech Republic
- Grape: Muller Thurgau
- Alcohol: 13%
- Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: Školní statek Mělník
- Price: 100 Kč
Mike's Tip
We actually had a tasting committee do the tasting on this one and the decision to include it in our box was unanimous. Fresh, light and unbelievably drinkable for 100 Kc. This is a perfect everyday light white that will not disappoint. Also interesting that all their wines are very low in preservatives (SO2) makes this stuff Bio!
