Italian treasure

Not yet winter, but summer is already getting ready to go. What better then to remember a few highlights of your holiday in Italy. And if you took a summer break in some other place this year, just pretend.

For me the perfect Italian summer white is one thing – Trebbiano. With it’s light color and taste, light alcohol level and just the right touch of acidity, this wine a refreshing choice any time. As a varietal on in a blend, you can’t go wrong. And lets not forget that Trebbiano from Lugana is still the most popular kid in class. Growing on the shores of lake Garda, this is THE trendiest white wine in Italy folks, so once again IWCoK members are part of the “In Crowd”!

And the reds… This month we focused on the quintessential Italian red – Chianti. Before you roll your eyes and tell me that I “Always” put Chianti in the box, hear me out. Sangiovesse is a fabulously juicy grape full of fruit and just a touch of tannin. A perfect red for pizza, pasta, salami and all the other stuff that we eat 3 days a week !  It also blends well with Merlot which you find in many of the super Tuscans.  Easy and versatile, it is a drinking wine – anytime.  Another wine from Sangiovesse this month and a bit up market is the Rosso di Montalcino or “Brunello’s little brother”. More refined and a bit more tannin, this is the one for your steaks on the weekend. And finally a  sure thing from Etna that will blow your sock off. Barbazzale is everything “Nerello” and a 93 point James Suckling rating.  This is a WOW from Sicily – enjoy it.

Stretch those last days of summer out with your friends and a few treasures from Italy. These wines are meant to be shared and with them a guaranteed smile.

Straw in color with light green highlights when held up to the light, this is a light wine that will work with any easy food. Look for green apple flavor and a touch of banana. Serve very cold!

Ravenna Bianco Ceregio IGP

Be careful here. The lower alcohol level and ripe lemon flavor makes this a refreshing wine that will disappear in your glass (with your help of course ;-) If you get past the lemon peel, you will find some apricots hidden in the back.

Orvieto DOC

Mike's Tip

Just like the label, this biological wine is full of character and (apple) flavor. A mix of 4 little known grape varieties, this wine is dominated by floral tones and minerals. Plenty of horse power in this one, so expect a long finish and pair with pasta with tomato sauce.

Lugana Bolla

Lugana became the "Must Drink" Italian white last year and is still topping the charts today. This is a wine full of tropical fruits with a good balance of acidity. A serious wine that is great for starting any party or sticking with till the end. Good stuff...

Chianti Monrosso

  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years

Mike's Tip

"A PERFECT pizza wine". That is how Robert Parker describe this one. All the classic hallmarks of a Chianti from Colli Sensi region. Medium bodied, full of fruit and tobacco, and a touch of acidity. Not too heavy, not too light = just right ;-)

Barbazzale Rosso

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: VinoDoc.cz
  • Price: 270 Kč

Mike's Tip

If I just introduce this wine as a heavy red from around Etna, you probably already have an idea of what your going to get. A mix of many things black (Nerello Mascalese a Nerello Cappuccio), James Suckling gave this heavy hitter a 93, and we think he was being modest!

Brezza

  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 11,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: VinoDoc.cz
  • Price: 220 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another Sangiovesse based cuvee, this is a light acidic red with a bit of green pepper. This is one you will want to pair with food, be it pizza or pasta and can be served slightly cooler.

Rosso di Montalcino

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Sangiovese
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: VinoDoc.cz
  • Price: 390 Kč

Mike's Tip

Kind of like Brunello's little brother, this is an elegant wine suitable for any table of baked meats. This is a medium bodied wine, refreshing with a good dose of tannin. Not a relaxing sofa drink, but a great companion at the table.
