Going South with Malbec

I confess. I ignored Malbec for far too long. Having had only 1 Malbec in our box over the past year, I have decided to put things right this month with a selection of Malbec’s and other great South American wines from our new supplier, Open Wine.

Malbec makes a great all round red that pleases just about everybody. Full and “Plummy”, it is normally easy to drink given its’ fruit flavor. It is also a thin skinned grape, making it popular in places with lots of sun. And that fact takes us to the origin of this month’s Malbec – the southern Andes of Patagonia (about as far south as you can get!

Arguably, Argentina produces the best Malbec because of one special feature – high altitude. Some cleaver guy ages ago discovered that these grapes do particularly well when grown between 1000 and 1,500m, and planted a whole lot of them. The result? A whole bunch of Malbec with 95+ points from Robert Parker to Wine Spectator – indeed people far more qualified than myself. My IWCoK super intelligent wine ranking system just said that the Malbec Rose is “Super Cool”.  This is a “94” for you real experts J

This month we also bring you our first Uruguayan wine in the form of a Tannat – the Uruguay nation grape! These are less tannic and considerably lighter than the Cabs and Merlots from the neighboring countries, giving you something that will feel a bit drier and more elegant. And of course we have a host of whites from the traditional Chardonnay (not too oaky !), Saugvignon and the lesser known Argentinian Torrontes.

And Open Wine ? Run by native Chilean Jorge Atisha in Olomouc, “Jiri” has seen a growing demand for his range of Chilean, Argentinian and Uruguayan wines that can not be missed in the best restaurants in town.

This will be very much a food wine for most of you. Lighter in color and flavor than the other heavy reds, this wine also has a bit more acidity demanding a bit of protein or fat to accompany it. My tip, a perfect match for pork on the BBQ !

Mike's Tip

Something about growing wine in Patagonia brings out the craziest flavors. The last thing I expected here was a full mouth of banana, vanilla and grapefruit. Not over oaked and a real treat of exotic flavor. Loved it!

The second anchor of Malbec day. Cherries, vanilla and caramel with just a hint of oak. A very full bodied wine that you will not want to share. Truly desert in a bottle.

Mike's Tip

This was the KING of International Malbec day 2015! The fact that I needed a tow truck to get friends and family away from this stand. The is truly a rare wine as you don’t see rose’s from Malbec often – even less in Patagonia. We guarantee you will love it.

Forest fruit and just a little musty. The subtle tannin make this a great full bodied wine that will not be competing with your food for monimnace. It is also a great red for sipping on the couch. Just relax…

Sauvignon Blanc Sel. Terroir

  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: OpenWine s.r.o.
  • Price: 224 Kč

Mike's Tip

Honest question. Have you had a Chilean Sauvignon in the past 3 years at any price that wasn’t good ? I haven’t found one. This is another entry in a long list of very drinkable Sauvignons with a fruity nose, grapefruit taste and a slightly oily finish.

Chardonnay Select Terroir

  • Alcohol: 12,5%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: OpenWine s.r.o.
  • Price: 224 Kč

Mike's Tip

After all my bad mouthing of Chardonnay in the past, I have discovered that |I actually like it more when it comes out of a steel tank! Fresh with a surprisingly light acidity and short finish. This is a great entry level wine that is perfect for a mid week dinner when you don’t want to pull out the big guns…

La Puerta Torrontes

Wine description:

  • Country: Argentina
  • Grape: Cuveé
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Light and refreshing dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
  • Supplier: OpenWine s.r.o.
  • Price: 290 Kč

Mike's Tip

Serve this wine cold and you will be happier. This will leave you a very pleasant finish and neutralize the front end that is a little challenged by the alcohol.
