Box: October 2013

This is BIG

If I had to pick a theme for this month box, it would be “BIG”. Big because we have some huge names in from the wine world both by region and by grape. So big in fact that our very elegant Bordeaux Blanc and our 100% Nebbiola from Piedmont take the supporting roles to two giants; Gigondas and Sancerre.

Most of you are probably familiar with the name Sancerre, and that it comes from France. So far, so good. Sancerre is arguably the top white wine from the Loire valley (the other being Pouilly-Fumé), and is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. These wines are normally quite dry, with a distinct mineral taste, are very flavorful and quite rich.

Gigondas on the other hand is the Rhone “Bad boy”. Think of Gingodas as Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s brother. Bother “Pape” got the brains, “Gigo” got the brawn. Nothing subtle about this red, and it got the 4th best rating of all Gigondas tested by magazine Wine and Degustation in their April issue.

Even better news is the other wines are also excellent. The Roero won Gold at Prague wine week, the 2 Spanish wines do incredibly well in there price range, a light Portuguese white that goes down so easy its’ perfect for any occasion, and given the popularity of the Primitivo, I slipped in an old (familiar) friend.
