At the Foot of the Mountains

Surrounded by the Alps on 3 sides, and bordering with France and Switzerland, Piedmont is arguably the best region in Italy for growing wine. Testament to this is the fact that this is the home of Barolo and  Barbaresco, I,e, probably the best Nebbiolo’s Dolcetto’s and Barbera’s in the world. If it is still not “clicking” for you, then think of fancy Italian red wines that age well, and often cost a fortune .

We come back to Piedmont every couple of years really by way of chance as the region normally does not give us many opportunities to fit in our budget. But every so often, we find an amazing Barbera or Dolcetto (my personal favorite) in our range that we can’t pass by. Indeed it was this month’s host of Dolceto and a fanatic Arneis that convinces me to do the hard yards, and search out a few more wines from the region.

Isn’t Dolcetto “sweet” ? These wines may have a bit more sugar content than a Nebbiolo, they don’t miss that tannic character of the region and are fresh and dry. I find that they have a bit more fruity flavor, and most importantly are meant to be drank young. You decide for yourself, as we have included 3 different Dolcetto’s from different parts of the region.

And who is the “Little Rascal”?  In the local dialect, the white grape variety of Arnies is called the little rascal as it is a notoriously difficult grape to grow. Normally found in the area of Roero, these are dry full bodied wines with strong pear and apricot tones. Even if a bit naughty, they are elegant and very very good.

So lets go enjoy the “View” at the foot of the Alps.

As the name implies, Piedmont is also famous for truffles! And the story just gets better! This wine is made 100% from the grape Favorita ! Look for mineral tones with a strong helping of pears. A simple wine but sure to be an outdoor dining "favorite" …( sorry : )

Roero Aneis

  • Grape: Arneis
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years

Mike's Tip

A Prague Wine Trophy gold medal winner, this is without question the most elegant white in this months box. A lovely mix of acidity and fruit that will be perfect with salmon or any fish on your plate. And a personal favorite - deep fried anchovies and Arneis = to die for…

Damilano Barbera d’Alba

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Barbera
  • Alcohol: 14,5%
  • Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
  • Drink: Wine suitable for aging
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 389 Kč

Mike's Tip

Big aggressive tannic blackberry flavor! The Piedmont Barbera's are not for those who don't like the quiet and subtle. This wine has strong spice elements, so be ready for a little cinnamon and green pepper. And of course, serve with beef! Wine Enthusiast 88 points.

Damilano Dolcetto d’Alba

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Dolcetto
  • Alcohol: 13,5%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 299 Kč

Mike's Tip

A deep rusty red, this is a wine with a bit more acidity mixed in with red fruits and almonds. Like a lot of young wines, Dolcetto is not a variety I suggest to drink without food. And ideal partner will be a pork chop or chicken. Make it a white meat weekend!

Damilano Langhe Arneis

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Arneis
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Rich, full-bodied dry white wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno výhodně.cz
  • Price: 330 Kč

Mike's Tip

If you prefer getting your advice from Wine Spectator, then 88. If you trust James Suckling, then 90 . Whatever your reference, another refreshing mineral fruit bomb. The mineral tomes are a bit more pronounced in this wine, so suggest fried foods and fish.

Dolcettto d’Alba

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Dolcetto
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno pro Vás
  • Price: 265 Kč

Mike's Tip

Another medium bodied fruity affair. Intense cherry and raspberry tones make this wine a little more acidic than that of Langhe, but again an excellent white meat red wine. Important for wines like this is to not drink them too warm!

Lange Dolcetto

Wine description:

  • Country: Italy
  • Grape: Dolcetto
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Style: Medium-bodied red wine
  • Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
  • Supplier: Víno pro Vás
  • Price: 195 Kč

Mike's Tip

I call this one an "All Rounder". Fresh and fruity, but a little less aggressive acidity making it an easy drink with any food, or even a bag of chips on the sofa given its more full bodied flavor. Probably the sugar, but hey, what do I know.
