An Italian Tour
This month we pass through the valleys a few Italian regions, sampling the treasures along the way. Soave, Dolcetto, Pecorino (no, not the cheese) are all stops on our August tour.
The whites provide a mix of the classic to the unfamiliar. A Pinot Grigio is of course with us. This light, easy to drink wine is undoubtedly the most tested Italian wine in your fridge. We also bring in a very up market Chardonnay from the Langhe. Piemont is always welcome for its elegance. And while we are up market, we move a little to the East for a Soave from the region around Verona. This 100% Garganega is surely what Romeo and Juliet were drinking on their dates!. We also introduce a little known and forgotten grape Pecorino. I don’t get it. Who would want to forget such a delicate, fruity wine with a perfect amount of minerals. 100% delicious even without the cheese.
And while we are in Verona, we may as well taste the Valpolicella they are so famous for – and we taste two. The Classico is a medium bodied wine with light tannin perfect for a sandwich or your spaghetti aglio e olio. The Second is a Ripasso and an altogether different beast. Full and jamy from the partially dried skins used in fermentation. This is Amarone’s first cousin and needs to be drank on a special occasion! We now travel south to the Tuscan stronghold of Montepulciano for an organic wine full of cherries and forest fruit. I can’t think of drinking wines from this region without a huge helping of red sauce. Pasta, ragu, whatever – you decide. We end our trip back in Piedmont with one of my favorites Dolcetto. The least tannic of the Piedmont wines and the easiest to drink, this one’s full body will be a surprise for your travelled pallet.
So strap your self in and get ready for a ride. We are finishing off this summer holiday with an Italian “Best Of” !!! – Cheers

Is there any white wine that you drink more of on holiday? Light yellow / green in color, with hints of apples and citrus. Ideal for the last hot days of summer. Simple solution to a glass of white wine.

Soave is one of Italy's Northern treasures. A rounder mouth and longer finish, this varietal will fill you with a creamy, citrus, salty flavor. Sound complicated? Don't worry - Soave never disappoints.

Mike's Tip
Not being a huge chardonnay fan myself, I loved this one because it was so different. No banana or pineapple, but full of citrus and exotic fruit. Expect a bit more acidity here, and that is exactly what makes this wine great.
Pecorino Colline Pescaresi

- Alcohol: 13,5%
- Style: Medium-bodied dry white wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption

Mike's Tip
Crystal clear, a little salty, and a light fruity flavor. This is a delicate wine that will match well with salads and white fish. Keep it away from oily and strong foods because this almost forgotten variety with hints of honey defiantly deserves its place in your mouth.
Manero

- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: VinoDoc.cz

Mike's Tip
This Sangiovese and Merlot blend brings a dark ruby, fruity wine with a touch of tannin and acidity. Served best with red meats and grilled cheese. The fruit in this wine will not be lost in any meal.
Montipagano

- Grape: Montepulciano
- Alcohol: 13%
- Style: Medium-bodied red wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: VinoDoc.cz

Mike's Tip
Montepulciano means black berries, licorice and spices. A medium bodied with a dose of tannin, I suggest a pizza or spaghetti. Best with red sauce and some cheese.
Valpolicella Classico
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Cuveé
- Alcohol: 12,5%
- Style: Medium-bodied red wine
- Drink: Wine for immediate consumption
- Supplier: VinoDoc.cz
- Price: 280 Kč
Mike's Tip
Not a huge full bodied hitter, but a great medium body and 100% bio. I found the cherries very pronounced, and although the nose wasn't particularly exciting, the balance was measured making it a very easy to drink wine.
Dolcetto Costa Fiore
Wine description:
- Country: Italy
- Grape: Dolcetto
- Alcohol: 14,5%
- Style: Full-bodied, rich red wine
- Drink: Wine with potencial 2 to 5 years
- Supplier: VinoDoc.cz
- Price: 295 Kč
Mike's Tip
Of all the wines in Piedmont, Dolcetto is the easiest one to drink. Look for a fruity flavor with firm tannin, licorice and leather. With a score of 91 points, this one is elegant and a winner.
